Just tried the microwave.

Set the timer for 4 seconds and hit the start button.

4.... 3.... 2.... (This thing isn't doing anything) 1.... (HOLY CRAP!!!)

Scared the crap out of me when it finally got going, and I don't think anyone will be reading that disk.

For any practical purpose, breaking in half will do fine. If the NSA/CIA/FBI or a fortune 500 is out to get you, then sandpapering off the metal, or microwaving(although it creates noxious fumes) will work. This will do almost as good as sandpaper, with less effort.

Actually I think its a pretty neat appliance.
Microwaving is bad, you get noxious fumes and might harm ur microwave.
Breaking? Shards fly, get caught in carpet.
Scratching through them, yeah, ok, but slower and annoying.
Say you have old cd burns, you can just wiz em through this thing easy.
I might get one to check it out.
FYI the price here is a lot less than other places who sell it.
Y not get em and egay em?

We have a nice paper shredder at work. I've fed a CD into it (it can handle about 20-30 sheets of paper at once), the cd is ground to smitherines.

I let my dog take care of them. Amazing what a rottweiler can do to a cd in about a minute.

I've also stabbed, snapped, cut, and microwaved (I think you're supposed to put the disc on a cup of water and not straight into the oven).... OOOOh, oven...haven't tried melting them in an oven yet.

I like this thread. I need more ideas.

Reminds me of my youth spent melting GI Joes to give them battle damage.

Take a wire brush to the top, 2 or 3 passes (couple seconds) and you will have denuded a one inch wide strip. If you're obsessive you can clean off the entire disc in 30 seconds or so.

Actually microwaving a CDR for a few seconds or scraping off a bit of reflective layer STILL may allow someone to read it.. All they have to do is replace the reflective layer (silver spray paint perhaps?) Not saying this is guarenteed but I would cook it longer and/or break it with a hammer, because remember on a CDR, the data is not in the foil, it's in the dye.

As far as the dye being made of cyanide, I doubt it. It's cyanine, totally different. (Just like those who think SILICON is the same as SILICONE)

Cyanine:
- Any of various blue dyes, used to sensitize photographic emulsions to a greater range of light.
- Any of various dyes that sensitize photographic film to light from the green, yellow, red, and infrared regions of the spectrum

Cyanide:
- Any of various salts or esters of hydrogen cyanide containing a CN group, especially the extremely poisonous compounds potassium cyanide and sodium cyanide
- A compound of cyanogen with a more electropositive element or group: as a : POTASSIUM CYANIDE b : SODIUM CYANIDE

***EVERYONE knows that fumes from burning plastic are TOXIC, right!?

I don't know how much is released by 'waving it. But if you can smell it I guess that's some at least.

but with hard disks, i throw em in the fire. it's fun to watch, too.
If you keep truly sensitive data on CDR (tech secrets/ government secrets or 'illegal' porn) data CAN be recovered even from pieces.

FREE (easy) methods of destruction (not recommending the Mwave or fire due to noxious fumes):

1) Put the CD in a plastic bag inside a paper bag and pound it into dust with a hammer (good workout, too) - works best with multiple CDs in the bag.

2) Put the CD on a cement floor (top down) and RUB until ALL the silver (or gold or whatever color foil) is off the CD's plastic (a belt sander is more efficient but the "floor method" takes about 20 seconds)

The costco shredder handles 15-pages and looks pretty sturdy. If you have a sub-10 page...especially if a cross cut, I wouldnt' try a CD.

Oh yeah...what's the big deal of data on a CD? as quoted from the product description....."CDs and DVDs may contain lots of Personal information"

Like anyone would ever find information on a CD? I mean, is someone going to buy a pallet of computer HW for a $1, find a CD in a drive, and actually look at the contents?!?! That will never happen........

When I need to destroy a CD, I use Roxio EZ CD Creator.

Oh - you're talking about CD's with Data already on them.

Guys, just take a damn knife, razor, or sharp edged piece of metal (small screwdriver)... 1 deep scratch on the label side from inside to outer edge and a cdr is gone, dust in 1 second flat.... and nothing is going to bring it back or make it readable. Add a little gas and a match and you super paranoid fools can get rid of fingerprints as well...

If it's a pressed cd, then cutting or breaking is fine.... save your 30 bucks for more blank media tho!
