'Cyanine' dye means it's blue, or more specifically, cyan. It has nothing to do with the poison cyanide. (Although cyanide the poison is extracted from a dye called Russian Blue.)

For more on composition of CD-Rs, and what happens when you microwave them, see cdrfaq.org's FAQ - How do CD-R's behave when microwaved?

I'm very organized. My CDs have various labels such as "Top Secret," "Embarrassing Medical Records," "Fetish Favorites Volume 24.11c," etc. I'd better buy this shredder . . .

Try sticking a burned CD into the microwave and letting it run for less than 2 seconds. You get a cool pattern on the dye that way.

We just use them as targets at the rifle range. Whenever we need more targets, we just grab a handful of free AOL cd's from a local store. There is something satisfying about watching an AOL cd shatter to bits.

BTW people this doesn't actually shred a CD. It's still in one piece afterwards. This imprints a small checkerboard pattern on both sides of the cd.

I wonder why they call it a "shredder" if it doesn't actually shreds. Oh well, but I found one on their site that does actually shreds.

ROYAL MD100 Media Destroyer 100 Paper Shredder

Shreds CD and Floppy Disc media
Shreds old credit and ATM cards
Shreds receipts, folded papers, bills and more - up to 7 in a single pass

PULL !!!

you have to tape a few together for that to work. trust me

LOL... thanks for the tip. Thought of doing this but just never tried. I suppose I should do it somewhere I can at least attempt to clean up the mess.

A quick and simple way to dispose of a CD: put it inside a thick magazine (to contain the pieces), then bend it until it snaps. If it won't break, turn it 90 degrees and try again (they seem to be very flexible in one direction, and brittle in the other). This will break the CD into several, if not dozens, of irregular pieces.

I still think it is cool to stick it into my shredder and 2 seconds later it is in all little pieces

Hmmmmmm... how about just superglueing a bunch of cd's together? Keep the pile growing. Eventually when it's large enough, you may be able to attach it to a lathe, and make something neat out of it. Hmmm.... 600 CD's firmly glued to each other would make a thick walled tube... perhaps use the tube for a "high tech" potato gun?

Sure . . . you could make CD "bricks" and eventually you could build that plastic house . . .

Seriously, IF you have data that is "critical enough" - even tiny CD "pieces" can be "read".

Heh...good idea.

I'm going to put a 6ft dowel into a board, stand it up, and toss my CD's on it. I'll just use some thick super-glue on the top layer CD before dropping another ontop of it.

wonder how long it'll take me to make a 6ft CD tube...heheheh (I'm guesstimating it will take about 1200 CD's at 100per/6in
