My DVD drive has been acting up lately. it wont run dvds well if at all. it spins in a cycle, spins up and then drops down, starts spinning again, drops down, in like 2 second cycles. Sometimes it will load the dvd menu, sometimes it will start playing, most of the time it just sits there spinning as whatever dvd viewing program im running stops responding, and nothing happens. Occasionally after taking like 5 mins to load up the menu, and the movie, it will run fine, at least for a while. Anybody have any solutions, or answers as to why its doing what it is?

Thanks for any responses

Maybe upgrade the firmware to your dvd drive... In some cases that voids warranty. Or you could try to get a replacement for it first.

i dont think its still under warranty, its a bit over 1 1/2 years old, and i think it might have had a 1 year on it. Now for the noobie question of the day, how do you upgrade the firmware?

Well first we need to know what model is your dvd drive.

Heres some info I found...
Apparently some other people
User reviews of your drive

Then you can decide whether or not you want to flash your firmware...
I personally dont recommend it. Since in trying to help find the firmware for you. People that tried to upgrade have had problems. And its probably better to shell out cash for a more quality DVD-ROM drive
I did a search for "Delta" Here

Goto this page and download CDVDInfo 1.35 once you unzip that and execute it will tell what version of firmware is on your drive.

Firmware 0.24 is for drive with firmware Ver. 0.09 and below.
Here

Firmware 2.40 is for drive with firmware Ver. 1.00 and above

running xp pro, which the box doesn't list support for it, but it ran fine for about 8 months on xp pro. Thanks for all the help storm ill check out all the stuff you linked me to arg, either the link is dead, or its just my campus firewall preventing me from downloading since its an ftp download (probably the second one). Oh well, i guess ill just have to cross my fingers each time i put in a dvd until i save up for a new one

I have the same drive as you, and am also running WInXP pro. my drive lasted a little 9months before it started acting up. taking forever to play DVD movies, ect. then one day the DELTA icon was gone from explorer (the symbol next to the driver letter). and from then on it would not work as a dvd player, it would read regular CDr's and data discs, but no DVD's. I pulled it and tired it in another computer that I own, and it works fine in that one. I do update my computers BIOS when the motherboard mfg puts them out, but I really cant say that it stopped working around the time of a BIOS update. all i know is that it will no longer work in my computer, but it now sits in my daughers computer, and works OK. go figure. it really was a dog of a DVD player. I finally purchased a Pioneer DVD player, and it worked great. I now have a Pioneer A04 (DVD burner). and i am loving that. The one thing I hated about the Delta is that it did not ever read normal everyday data discs well, meaning fast, it read them at what seemed like 4x-8x speed, where as most current CD drives now are above 50x. the pioneer DVD player I purchased was amazing, its normal cd reading speed was around 40x, and its DVD reading speed was 16x.

Yeah, it hasn't been the best drive, really sucks, i spent 70 on it because it had a 40 mail in rebate that i never ended up recieving back. Eh, ill have to make it last a couple months, maybe to the summer untill i have money to spare for a new one, i have a few other things that are a bit higher on the priority list, but ill fit it in when i can. Untill then, i just hope it doesn't die completely, if i let it sit a while i can now get it to play a dvd all through without too much of a problem.
