DVD drive recommendations

I'm looking for a good DVD/CD-ROM drive for a new rig that I will be (hopefully) building in the next few weeks. Since I am probably going to go with a Plextor as my burner, I want a drive with fast seek times (the plextor burners have 150ms seek times, which is really slow to use as a primary CD ROM). oh, I'm also a college student, so $75 and under is definitely a plus.

I really like my CD-ROM Blaster (Creative) because it is esp. good at ripping music (for later use). You may want to try the DVD Blaster however, I'm not sure what the asking $$$ is. You may just want to go with a cd-rom (which comes definatly under budget) until you have the funds to get a high end dvd/cd-rom. I would say in the case of a DVD drive - you do get what you pay for.

I appreciate the comments roc. However, I want this new rig to last as long as possible (for my budget). So I do want a DVD drive. I have a 52x generic drive that I can migrate from my Pentium 200 MMX (@233, not that the extra 33 MHz helps much, but...). The problem with it is that it sounds like I'm having a helicopter take off inside my computer everytime it spins up. Literally, people in the hall can hear it as they walk by... its that bad.

I second both of these. Pioneer and Toshiba and arguably the 2 best DVD-ROMs around and it'll be well under your budget of $75.

Here's another vote of Pioneer and Toshiba. I've got the pioneer DVD-105S myself, and I love it. If you're going to go pioneer, though, look for the 106; I understand that they are quieter and cooler running.

I also think the Pioneer's are pretty good, and even the Panasonic 16X i picked up a while back is nice.
