DVD drive stuck at 1.5 MB/Sec Vista x64 + x86

As the title states, my DVD drive will neither read or write any faster than 1.5 MB/Sec. See pic here for DVD read speed test: http://i19.tinypic.com/6frtx03.jpg

The drive is a Lite-On LH-20A1S SATA DVDRW drive.

The rest of my system specs:
AMD X2 5200 (2.6 GHz)
ASUS M2R32-MVP mobo (ATI Express 3200 chipset)
4GB PC2-6400 (GSkill)
Radeon X1900GT
3 SATA HDD's
500 Watt Enermax Liberty PSU

Transfer speed on my HDD's is perfectly fine. The four drives are all on the 4 onboard SATA ports. In the BIOS, the DVD drive is set to PIO mode 4, and UDMA 5.

The speed is the same with any burning program, though they all report burning at 16x for DVD's. The 1.5 MB/sec is the same for 3 different DVD brands, and 2 different CDR brands.

Any ideas what my issue may be? Thanks in advance.

Thanks cutthroat...I should have seen that. OK...it seems the drive is in PIO mode 4, but when I click enable DMA, nothing happens. Also, are there supposed to be 2 entries for Channel 0 and 1? See pic here: http://i12.tinypic.com/68kwljc.jpg

Thanks.

What you might have to do is to uninstall that drive, then reboot.

It will install itself again, then check if it is DMA or UDMA on the reboot.

Uninstalling the drive didn't help. Also, even if I was in PIO mode 4, the transfer speed should be much faster. PIO mode 4 has a max transfer rate of 16.7 MB/sec, and even PIO mode 0 has a max transfer of 3.3 MB/sec...I seem to be locked at 1.5 MB/sec.

Should there be 2 entries for Channel 0 and 1?

Read this article. PIO mode is usually a fall back when too many errors occur. what you should do is this: go into device manager and delete the primary and/or secondary IDE channel. reboot and they should be redetected. Now the drive should be in DMA mode.

another thing too check would be the cable. are you using an 80pin IDE cable? maybe you're using an older 40-pin cable? try a different cable.

His drive has a SerialATA interface.

kamel, can you post a recording session's log?

Yes...there was no change. Also, even if I was in PIO Mode 4, my transfer rates should still be much higher. I have tried removing the drive and the ATA channels, and there has been no change once the devices were reinstalled.

Does anyone know...are there supposed to be 2 entries for each channel, as in the picture here: http://i12.tinypic.com/68kwljc.jpg

What that pic says to me is you have the DVD drive as Primary and an IDE hard drive as Secondary on that IDE Channel, the 'Enable DMA' checkbox is not checked and should be, that is the most obvious thing.

ATA Channels 0 and 1 are my 4 SATA ports...I only have 4 SATA devices...no IDE at all. I have checked the Enable DMA checkbox, OK'd it, and even tried a reboot, but the box is not checked the next time I go in. Regardless, the HDD IS in UDMA 6, so DMA must be enabled.

Even forgetting about DMA for a second, if I am in PIO Mode 4 for the DVD drive, the transfer rate should still be much faster, correct?

This is the speed of the interface and not necessarily the sustained transfer rate of the drive itself. PIO 4 has a theoretical 16.7MB transfer rate whereas for instance your drive at maximum CD speed of 48x reads/writes at 7MB. As already pointed out, PIO mode means something is wrong.

I suggest you check the SATA cable is properly connected. You may also try to change the SATA port it is in. Update motherboard drivers, drive firmware.

Cables are plugged in correctly, switching SATA ports changed nothing. My drivers are up to date, and I have the latest firmware...I'm at a loss here!

Have you tried the drive in a different PC to see if there's any difference? Would at least narrow down if it's a problem with the drive or your PC.

-Something is wrong here, this drive has a UDMA 4 specification.

-In the Nero log none of your physical drives are appear in the "Scsi-Device-Map". The two listed drives are virtual I assume. What virtual drive utility do you use? You could try disabling/uninstalling it and see what goes.

-Post a Nero Infotool report of the configuration tab.

I have an SATA card that I'll try plugging in...that'll at least tell me if it's something with the mobo (driver issues), or the drive. Unfortunately, I don't have another PC at the moment to try the drive in, and it's not worth piecing one together from parts!

Also, I use Daemon tools...no change with it uninstalled (x86 or x64).

I think it must be a driver issue for my mobo. I put in a SATA Raid card I had, and the drive is working perfectly, with UDMA available. For some reason, the HDD's are working in UDMA, but my optical drive would not. I tried switching SATA ports on the mobo, and I'm using the same cable, and only the DVD drive had an issue.

I guess I'll use the SATA card, and recheck after any driver updates come out. Thanks for everybody's suggestions.
