DVD drive won't recognize discs

I just upgraded my motherboard/cpu and am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I was having some trouble booting up my SATA hard drive with Win 7 already installed, but I got it working after switching the SATA mode in bios from AHCI to IDE. Everything seems to be working except for my DVD drive. The drive (as listed under device manager) is TSST corp CD\DVDW SH-S183L ATA Device.

The drive is recognized by the OS, and says the device is working properly and drivers are up to date, but it never recognizes when I put any DVD/CD in. I saw someone had the same problem, and solved it by switching the SATA controller mode in bios back to IDE. I have tried that, but to no avail. I'm really not sure what's wrong with it? Can anyone help me out please?

Update: I tried booting to the dvd drive from bios (using clonezilla disc) and it failed to boot to it. It made this repeating spinning sort of sound, displayed black screen for about 20 seconds, then proceeded to boot Win 7 from the hard drive.

The drive worked fine on my old hardware, then suddenly stops working a few hours later after I install the new hardware. Anyone have any idea why the drive wouldn't work on a new motherboard/cpu?

And you used that optical drive to do the initial installation, at which time your SATA ports were both initially configured as AHCI?

Did you try booting from the HDD with the optical drive disconnected, and in this situation are you able to set it to AHCI?

Do you have the latest firmware for the optical drive? The model number appears to indicate Samsung.

My money would go on the optical pick-up lens being dirty.
Have seen this many times in the past - I even had to clean my Laserdisc player.

Try a lens-cleaning disc first. If that doesn't work, and you're brave enough, try to open the drive and clean the lens yourself, with a couple of q-tips and maybe even some isopropylic alcohol.

I had already installed Windows 7 on my old hardware a few days before I switched over to the new motherboard/cpu. My new mobo doesn't have any IDE ports, and one of my hdd's is IDE. So I wanted to install Win 7 on my SATA drive and transfer over my IDE drive stuff. This is why I installed Win 7 before installing the new hardware.

So, I don't think the dvd drive has ever worked on my new motherboard since I installed it a couple weeks ago. I've updated all the mobo drivers by downloading them. I'll try looking for a firmware update for the Samsung dvd drive if I can find one.

I updated the firmware. Nothing.

I've also replaced the data cable. Tried it in multiple SATA ports (both 3gb/s and 6gb/s). Set the SATA ports to IDE and ACHI, no difference. I'm about to give up and just order a new DVD burner. I know they're super cheap, but I dislike having to replace something for no apparent reason or incompatibility. I tried the drive in another machine, and it worked fine.

No one else has ever had a problem like this?

I understand your frustration, but no, it hasn't ever happened here.

Just for grins, have you tried completely clearing CMOS and resetting the motherboard's BIOS to defaults, then reconfiguring?

That just has me baffled. You'd think those interfaces would all be compatible by now. Of course, you haven't yet tried a second optical drive on the board yet, so you're not 100% certain that the issue isn't there -- but you're close to finding out. Hopefully it's just that one unlucky pairing, and nothing more. Good luck.

Hi, did you ever get this resolved? I have two ASUS burners, about 3-4 years old now, and all of a sudden neither is able to read disks, though like you I've tried everything, including uninstalling both drivers and letting windows reinstall them, changing SATA ports on the mobo, trying different disks etc.
One of the drives was getting a little funky last week, wouldn't read. Now neither of them. I guess it's possible that both would fail so close to each other, but I'm suspicious of malware, virus etc.
Device Manager says both are working just fine. They spin up and act like they're reading the disks (I tried various disks, no dice with anything), but they make funny noises, mechanical clinking noises, on and off, which they've never done before, although I've heard drives do that when there's something goofed up with the software or firmware.
Brand new system, like you, Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen 3. Drives worked great just a couple days ago...well, one did, not the other one.
