DVD Lags

I don't know if this would be a software problem or hardware problem. My dad bought a Compaq 5000 series 5WV294. It worked okay for about 7 months. But like the topic says, the dvd plays good for a few minutes but after that the dvd starts to lag and it lags pretty bad. Would this be a hardware problem. If so then thats a good thing. We have a 3 year warranty with Best Buy and if we bring it in 4 times and 4 things get replaced then we get a FREE brand new computer. So i'm kinda hoping that it is a hardware problem.

Is there any other way I can screw up my computer with out them knowing I did it on purpose. I already took it in for the floppy ( thats one ), the CPU fan ( thats two ) I just need two more problems in one more year. CAN SOMEBODY SCREW UP MY COMPUTER ( never thought I would say that )

Is the DVD connected to a mpeg decoder or is it just running off of processor power (software DVD)?

If its just software then its probably the bane of Windows. Some program has thoroughly messed with the interface in windows (ME I am guessing). A reload and it would be happy again for a little while until you load a bunch of older or poorly written software (which seems to be most of it nowadays).

Have you made sure the DVD player is DMA enabled? Also have you defragmented lately and have you tried turning all your TSR's (resident programs like those in your tray) off and play the DVD?

An mpeg decoder is a board whose sole purpose is to take and uncompress mpeg video as it streams from the dvd player.

I have enabled DMA and yes I have Defraged ( two days ago ) and I do turn off all the running programs. It still lags.

I went to Newegg.com and looked at a decoder card. It looks like a video card. Does this mean that I have no use for my VooDoo 5 anymore? Do I have to keep switching the monitor cable from the VooDoo to the decoder everytime I want to watch a DVD? Can I have both of them in the computer and not have any conflicts?

A DVD decoder card works with your video card in this case the voodoo5. You simply pass the signal thru to the decoder card. It does however degrade the the 2D quality of your image but hardware decoding is quite superior to software IMO.

So I hook up my monitor to the decoder and still leave my Voodoo in my computer and I get the quality of the VooDoo? Is it worth it to buy it?

go to run and type in msconfig. Uncheck the programs that runs in the back ground on start up tab.
You should not need a decoder for 1gig CPU. chances are its ur computer is not functioning Properly.

If the DVD is starting to lag after 7 months of use, you might have the DVD drive getting worn. I'd take it to them and make them check it out.

I unchecked the programs from RUN mscofig. It still lags. I think i'll just take it in and if it's not the dvd then i'll get a decoder card. Thanx for the help guys.

With that system 1ghz and a voodoo5 you should have no problem playing dvds....My 750tbird played my dvd's fine on a voodoo3 agp with no decoder card. I need the decoder card for the voodoo3 to play on a amd k6-2 400 though...

Watch the light on the front of the drive and see as it is playing that the light is staying constantly lit or flashing at same rate....

What are your current ide device configurationlike??? make sure dvd driveis oposite the harddrive...The harddrive is only 5400rpm...Try dvd-rom as the secondary master or slave...

Your DVD drive is getting ready to take a permanent dump. I just RMA'd my Lite On DVD. It started out by lagging once in awhile. Then it began taking 5-10 tries to get it to recognize a disc and when it did it lagged. Finally it quit recognizing discs at all.

Take it back to BB and have them fix it. That's what you paid for. When you go to pick it up after it's fixed (supposedly) have them demo it right there in the store. If it still has a problem then there's #4. New computer.

hey there is one thing u can check if its the dvd drive itself that is acting up. use smartRipper to rip the .vob files from dvd to hd, then play the new vob files using powerDVD or winDVD. if it works fine then u know something is wrong during dvd drive spin...

The last thing I added was my Sound card. Hercules Game Theater XP. But it was lagging before I even added my sound card.

I did it and it still lags. So it might not be my DVD drive. What else can I do?

your power supply is very skimpy thats why I asked, That would be the first thing that I would upgrade !Also when I use powerDVD my dvd player lags too, so why dont you try some different software to play your dvd's. I personally think that its your powersupply!

catchen try and run aspicheck and see if all your aspi is installed correctly. I had similar problem in win me, then I installed aspi32.exe to get correct install driver installed.
