DO NOT BURN AT HIGH SPEEDS!

All the people in the recording industry - who know what they are talking about - say you should NEVER, EVER burn at the highest rated speed, if you really care about the quality of the recorded material. Always record stuff at the lowest possible speed.

Personally, I cannot comprehend this urge that some have to record at the highest speed possible... it's not like waiting 25 minutes to complete a DVD (at 2.4x) will make you llose your precious time.

It also depends on how you are doing the copy. If you are trying to do a drive to drive (aka "on the fly") those will often go slow particularly if both drives are on the same channel. Best performance will be obtained by ripping to HD then burning. HD and DVD burner should also be on separate IDE channels for best performance. You should visit the CDFreaks forums to determine the best media compatibility for your drive (also check the mfr's site for a media compatibility list) and then stick with the most compatible brand even if they cost more. Also be sure that your drives are set to a fast DMA mode.
. My Plextor 712A seems to eat any top brand (which Verbatim/Mitsubishi Chemical is - most burners are confirmed with Verbatim/MCC and Taiyo Yuden media) media well.

Yes I have with a Pioneer and 16x media also. But mine was corrected with a firmware update on the burner.

2.4x seems a little low. Sounds like it does not recognize the media in the firmware even though you updated to the latest.

A Hacked bios could remove the burn limit but your at your own risk with that.

I also agree with a others that burning at lower speeds is better for critical media. Movies I dont believe are as important because a DVD player will continue if a bit or two is messed up. Only really bad media will cause a DVD player to stop and stutter. I burn most everything at 8x with no problems based upon the reviews 8x burns on Pioneer didnt have any data errors. 16x burns did on virtually every burner until recently but were not talking much time in burns.

I also have the sohw-812s drive but have a 25 pack of Memorex 16x DVD+R discs that will only burn at 2.4 when I put them in. The disc text info says they are made by Ricoh. I have the Q firmware, which is the latest so don't know what else to try.

I normally buy 8x media and burn them at 4x and planned on burning these at 4x or maybe at the max drive speed of 8x but 2.4x is just really slow.
