Hi,

Anyone else getting poor/choppy DVD movie playback?
At first I thought it was my settings, but the drive is a MASTER
on it's own IDE channel(only device on that channel).
Channel setting is UTRA DMA 33(I tried various other settings as well).

Then I thought it was the DVD drive(see specs below). So I swapped in
my old Pioneer DVD player, nope, same problem.

THEN, just for the heck of it, while playing a movie, I went to NTUNE and ran
nVidia Performance, I ran the Graphics Performance benchmark, a few windows came up, and then I closed out of NTUNE. Once I closed out, POOF, magically the DVD movie playback was flawless. (Weird)

Anyone else had issues with DVD playback on this board? If so how did you fix it?

Thanks much!

Which drivers are you using for your SLI'd 6800U's? Do you have the nV DVD Decoder installed? Which player do you use, and did you enable hardware acceleration in its settings?

Dang, I hadn't even realized that nVidia included a DVD decoder... Is that on the mobo install cd or is it part or the chipset drivers or a 3rd party CD? Thanks.

ps- Currently rebuilding my SLI and can't check to see if I have this DVD-playback problem yet...

Unfortunately the DVD Decoder cost $19.99 due to royalty fees ect. it does give a 30 day trial though so you can evaluate it. Here is the PVP FAQs we have been working on link there is a link tot he article showing how to properly tweak the DVD Decoder console ect.

Yes, Hardware Acceleration is currently on. Tried it both ways, same result.
I've tried WinDVD, PowerDVD, same results.
Drivers I've tried with, 71.40, 71.80(current), and something like 66.93

Give the decoder trial a shot and tweak it as per the Anandtech review I linked in the FAQs post, might want to give the 67.66's a try with it too, but I don't know what effect they have on SLI setups if any. You have fastwrites enabled too correct?

I found by setting my windvd to hardware acceleration I usually get <10-15% max on dvd playback....before acceleration I had like 20-25%...

I would never pay for Nvidias encoders...My windvd version came with my dvd-rom...so I have already paid for it, thank you!!!

Sounds fixd anyways...obvioulsy it was a driver chipset issue and not hardware...

Well, I tried that decoder, it makes no difference.
Like Duvie said, and I'm pretty sure as well, it's a driver/chipset issue. Either the video card driver, the chipset driver, or both.

What lends me to believe this, is running NTUNE and having it do a Graphics Performance Benchmark fixes the problem. It must be doing some resets somewhere along the way. So I'll need to do that for the time being before I play NE movie I guess.
Would like to hear other people's experiences.

This decoder only seems to work with Windows Media Player, and when it's enabled, the screen had loads of distortion. Which again could be a driver issue.
True, I'm using a beta driver, but this driver also is enabling SLI for one of my games and it seems it's doing a little better than other drivers.

It's the maturity of this product is what it comes down to. nVidia have proven one thing to me. They're extremely good at selling stuff that doesn't work and or lacks the proper driver support.

One of these days one of these major corporations will screw around with the wrong people and there'll be some taking of names. I'll enjoy watching a company get thrashed for screwing over the customer by releasing C$#@ stuff.

Wrong. And the distortion is definitely the drivers, that has been well established here already. There are drivers do not create the distortion but since all I getf from this discussion is negative feedback fvck off

The only time the decoder showed up(the icon) was when I was playing a movie in Windows Media Player. When I played the same movie in Powerdvd and Windvd, the icon didn't come up, and I did see any of the options in both programs.
