So I decided to get a new TV and of course build a HTPC for it. My first thought was, "well, now I need to get a fancy VIVO card..." but then I saw my old Radeon 9500 Pro laying around and saw that it had the never-used DVI connector. Today's HDTVs have DVI inputs. A lightbulb lit up over my head; since I don't have (and don't intend on getting) any broadcasting, and my HT would be used only for DVDs and avi/mpg/wmv/mp3/whatever, perhaps I could just keep my old vid card!
But then as I browsed the current VIVO cards, I noticed they were all bragging about their superior DVD playback and video out and crap like that.
So my question to the all-knowing forum is:
Will an older 9500 Pro show DVD and other visuals on a 720p HDTV just as well as newer cards, or do they have some notable quality enhancements?
And also (in case I'm missing something) - am I correct in assuming that such a HTPC would have just as good quality as any standalone DVD player? I'm assuming so because the output resolution of most video cards has always been way above consumer appliances. Is this assumption correct?
