DVD playback problem

Hello,

Here is my system: Win2k Pro, Amd 1.2 GHz, Abit KT7A-RAID, ATI Radeon 64 MB DDR VIVO, Creative Audigy Plat, a Toshiba 16X DVD drive, LiteON CDRW, IBM 40 GB, Maxtor 13 GB, internal zip, a DVD capture card and a modem.

The DVD player always gives me an error message, saying sound card not installed properly or a couple other possibilities I don't remember right now. The sound card works fine for everything else. (Although my comp has had occasional freezes playing Deus Ex since I got the sound card) What are some ideas on what is wrong and what can I do? Thank you for any help...

If you really want any help, you need to replace "the DVD player always gives me an error message, saying sound card not installed properly or a couple other possibilities I don't remember right now" with something much more detailed.

You don't want to follow the suit of many users who call tech support and say, "Uhh, this blue thingy came up, and it's asking me to do something, or something else".

I think he means "DVD decoder" card.. Unless he actually has an MPEG encoder card...

First off your motherboard has problems with many sound cards. Try searching groups.google.com for a way to correct the problem or for a compatible sound card.

Second, ditch the DVD card. You don't need one and it adds the additional chance for fault. If you really want to minimize CPU use while watching DVD's get a cheap ATI video card and enable hardware acceleration.

Too tired, you have an ATI card already ;-) Just ditch the decoder card and run PowerDVD or WinDVD.

Is that a DVD decoder card? If so, is it connected to your sound card? If not, the dvd sound probably will not function properly to give you the sound.

Update all drivers and download any patches (PCI latency path) that you can. Then, try moving your sound card to different PCI slots.

I would definitely keep the hardware DVD decoder (if that's indeed what he has, he hasn't responded yet!). DVD decoders generally provide higher quality/performance playback, and have a much lesser CPU utilization.

Umm. no vboy. DVD SW always spanks HW decoder cards. True, cards use less cpu but so what? With the fast cpu chips out now it doesnt really matter for just watching movies.

Sorry, it is a DV capture card for my miniDV camera. Also, I am trying to use the software that came with the ATI card. I'm trying to remember the error message I get but I'm at work not home so I can't bring it up again. It says some thing like "your sound card is not installed properly or is in use by another device" and then a couple other things that I can't remember, but didn't seem likely to me. I originally had an old SB Live! value and the DVD player told me my sound card couldn't keep sync, so I got the Audigy... Thanks for all the help so far...
