DVD Question

I am in the process of getting a DVD burner to back up DVD movies.
Do I need a DVD-ROM to read from?
I do not anticipate using the burner for much other than movie back-up's, any opinions on NEC ND-2500A or Lite-On 811?

No, just rip to your hard drive and burn the backup back to the disk. DVD backups are not going to be real time because the data usually has to be recompressed to fit on the DVD-R disk. You may get somewhat faster ripping speeds out of a DVD-ROM drive, but that will only save you a few minutes out of a 45 - 90 minute process.

I've got older NEC and Liteon DVD+/-R drives. Both have been very reliable.
