DVD question

I've just bought the Season one box set of Stargate SG-1, and started watching them. For some reason, everytime a scene changes, like when camera angles change, you can see horizontal lines on the screen. It looks almost like the TV isn't painting the picture fast enough to keep up with the scene change. I'm using my original XBOX to play the DVD on a non-HD TV, connected via S-Video cable. Is this a problem with the movies or my setup? The DVD box says it's "Mastered in High Definition", but it should still look decent on a regular TV, right? Maybe it's just a problem with the way the first season was filmed? Thanks for any help.

The xbox dvd player is about as good as the $25 models you can buy from walgreens

Thanks doze. I appreciate you giving me a straight answer without being rude. So I should fix it by just buying a good DVD player? I guess I'll do that whenever I find an HDTV for a price that I like. I just haven't found anything worth the money yet. There are some good deals out there now, I just haven't wanted to spend the money. I guess it's about time to catch up to the rest of the world. Thanks again, doze.

Sounds like something is messed up with the interlacing either on the DVD or in your player. If you don't see this on other DVD's then I would try the DVD in a different player to see if its any different. This will tell you what is wrong...

My Stargate does not do that on my good dvd player but I do have issues with it going dark on my cheap dvd player.

And no I don't have HD or anything better than an $80 dvd player. Which episode and section specifically? I can try it in my xbox and see if I find the same issue.

It's had the problem on every episode up to four. I haven't watched past that one. I also haven't had a chance to try it on another DVD player, but I will. The only thing is that I have never noticed the problem with any other DVD I've watched on my XBOX. It doesn't have great quality, but its always been decent. Thanks for the help.

The xbox is 5 years old, and when it came out it was a decent DVD player but not top of the line. You don't have to go out and spend big bucks on a DVD player, a $50~75 sony, samsung, philips, toshiba etc... player that looks great on your current TV will do the job if you upgrade to a decent HDTV in the near future. The current upconverting DVD players are worthless and the HD and blu-ray are overpriced for the common man.

My recommendation is find a store with a liberal return policy and try out a player in your budget now. If your not happy then return it and try another then another till you find one you like. Start with your local walmart, you might be surprised what is hanging out on the shelf. It took me 4 players and 2 different stores to be happy with my current player and I ended up with a philips that plays just about everything.

I don't know why you say the current upconverting players are worthless. There are many good ones and they make a significant difference.

I know the answer is probably out there, but since we're already on the subject, will any DVD player play in Hi-Def as long as the DVD is recorded in Hi-Def? I'm sure you have to have it connected with some higher quality cables, at least component. I also didn't have any problem with the DVD on another DVD player, so I'd say you were right about the player being the problem. I guess I'll go to the store and start looking next time I'm off work. Thanks again.

There are no commercial DVD's in anything higher than 480i

To get high def you have to go blu ray or HDDVD

Oh, OK. That explains the whole BluRay and HDDVD thing. I was kinda wondering why they were so amazing. I guess I need to start keeping up with this stuff again, it's all passing me by. Thanks.

PAL 625 x 570 (625 lines)

therefor region 2 dvd's are 570i
From working with both for a while PAL is better quality I'd say.
