DVD-R burn speed on 16X

Hey Guys,

I'm pretty NEWB to burning DVD media and I just bought a Toshiba SD-R5372 16X dual layer burner. I'm using 16X Taiyo Yuden media and it still takes me 1 hour and 15 min to burn a DVD on Nero. It doesn't say that theres any errors or anything and I'm able to select 16X as the speed.

I was just under the impression that 16X would burn in 10 min instead of 60-70 min. Help!?

You're burning over 3 times as much data as you would on a CD.

i dont think it should take that long....

probably most of the time is spent compiling the ISO file. are you doing a straight burn from an image or premastering??

if premastering, maybe the reason its slow is because of the source you're getting data from?

something is wrong with your settings..or you are copying and decrypting a copyright dvd.. just burning data should take about 5 or 6mins.
if you are copying a commercial dvd with copy protection first you must decrypt the dvd (using dvd shrink etc).. and then burn.. it takes about 45mins to an 1.5hrs depending on your processor etc.. not sure if nero can decrypt copyright dvds.. but that may be what you are doing.

like others have stated, the actual burning process should only take ~6mins, but if you are copying from another dvd-rom, then you need to take into account the amount of time it takes to get the original data off the disc, transcode/re-encode and then finally burn and possibly verify(if you have that checked in nero)

what exactly is it that you are doing?

I don't know about other drives but I've noticed dual layer burns take significantly longer cause at least on the drives I'm familiar with they burn much slower than the 16x max (I think mine does it at 3.2x speed).

Have you checked to make sure that your optical drive has slipped into PIO mode?

Check in Device Manager under your IDE controller to see if it slipped into PIO mode. That's the only thing I can think of. Also perhaps there may be a new firmware for your drive that fixes this issue.

For the most part, I'm just backing up data, burning stuff like music videos and MP3s- dragging and dropping files into Nero and burning them. I guess its not an ISO really, but as far as just burning data, it takes a while. It takes me a good 2 1/2 hours to use DVD shrink and copy a DVD. What is this PIO thing you guys are talking about? Sorry... I'm REALLY NEWB.

What speed does nero say it's burning at? Sounds like 1x ...

Exactly what I was thining. If you find they are in PIO mode (this has happened to me a few times). Look at the location and uninstall the driver for the IDE channel the burner is on (and the dvd-rom). Reboot your system and they will come back and go into DMA mode. Make suer you have DMA if available selected.
