I posted the same thing at Cdfreak but the post was deleted within two hours.

Which of following media is good?

Samsung 4X 4.7GB DVD-R 50-Pack in Cake Box, Model DRG47450CC, OEM $36.99
link

RIDATA 4X DVD-R 4.7GB, Model DRD-474-RDCB50, OEM $28.99
link

Ritek DVD-R 4.7G 4X 50PACK, Model DRD-47-4X-RDSM, OEM $36.99
link

Some people said the Ridata 4x (also own by Ritek) and Ritek 4X are suing the same Ritek G04 discs. I found that hard to believe because it doesn't make much sense that a company would sell the exact same media under different name and at different price. By the way the Ritek 4X 50 DVD-R spindle also has the Ridata logo printed on it red plastic spindle cover.

I have been lucky with Ritek DVD-R 4.7G 4X 50PACK, Model DRD-47-4X-RDSM, OEM $36.99. No coasters with the first 16.

OT: If your choices aren't limited to DVD-R media, NewEgg has available, Ridata(Ricoh/Ritek) 4X DVD+R 100 pack for $47.99 AR.

According to several people, the 2 best recordable DVD media you can buy are:

Hitachi Maxell MXL G02 - 4x DVD-R made in Japan
Taiyo Yuden TYG01 - 4x DVD-R made in Japan.

Both of them are DVD-R, and some think they are the 2 best medias available regardles of the format. The 8x versions are out, and should be as good (MXLG03, TYG02)

The RICOHJPN DVD+R are popular, but let's be honest: It is a step below of the 2 I mentioned. You can get Maxell media at several retailers. Fujis are usually Taiyo Yuden. The key here is to look for the magic words on the packages (Maxell or Fuji): "Made in Japan" . It will not be cheap, but it is well worth.

Thanks to all those who replied. I bought the Samsung DVD-R because I have already burned many Ritek 4X and wanted to try something new. Personally, I don' tlike Ritek's shinny slick silver top because it is difficult to write on. I was tempted to buy Ridata because it's so cheap. However, at 4..38G storage capacity per discs, I do not want to risk any chance of losing data due to low quality media. There is reviewer who mentioned that he has problem playing back a Ridata DVD-$ a few months after it was burn.

I prefere DVD-R because DVD+R is non as DVD player friendly as DVD-R.
For those who like DVD+R, Newegg sells Ridata DVD+R 50 spindle, which is getting rave review from users, for $29.99. Unfortunately, mos of the Newegg users there don't report about long term durability (which is the true test for any recordable media) of DVD media.

Samsung 4x DVD+R 50-pack are Taiyo Yuden and they're just as good as the -R version if not better (depending on your burner). Cheap at newegg too and just burn with -ROM book type with a bitsetting capable burner and you'll get a compatability that is just as good as -R if not better too.

"burn with -ROM book type with a bitsetting capable burner"

How do you burn with -ROM book type? What does bitsetting have to do with compatibility? Please elaborate on your answers.

Bitsetting means changing bits for the book type/disc category from the default, for example DVD+R (10) for a DVD+R disc, to for example DVD-ROM (0) just like a pressed disc have which is the most compatible format. So if a DVD player doesn't recognize a DVD+R/RW disc with the standard book type burning with DVD-ROM book type can fool the player into thinking it got a pressed DVD and therefore make it play the disc in most cases.
For this to work your DVD writer's firmware need to support this function. For example DVD writers from Lite-On, BenQ, Nu and Ricoh support this. Personally I would not buy a DVD writer without it, especially for DVD+R DL it's very important for the compatibility.
