those DVD's generic? it so, could be the crappy media, not the burner...
I had nothing but bad luck with generic media, and as it stands right now, wont be using it again.

Which ever I can find the best deal on quality media (Ritek and Prodisc have been great for me)

I find personally no difference between the two. ( I personally use DVD+R but then again I can burn both formats) If you want to make a desition check HERE to see what type of discs your DVD player can play...

I use whatever I get for free from friends who think any blank discs will burn on their CDRW's. Seriously, I've got quite a few of these friends who have given me a nice stock of +R's and -R's.

If you're getting a new drive there is no reason not to use whichever you can get cheaper as most drives can burn either and once they are burned it makes no never mind. Just make sure the drive you get can set the Booktype bits if you are burning to play in consumer-level players. The Plextor PX-712A is highly recommended and with the $30. rebate offer running 'til the end of the month, they are actually a reasonable price... Newegg has a special price on the black one this weekend.
