Does anyone have one of these already? What are their speeds? Write? Rewrite? Read?

Creative makes one. 5.2GB capacity. Write speeds at 1X, read speeds at 2X, SCSI-II interface.

I believe that DVD-RAM is a transient standard....the final standard is supposed to be DVD-RW, which Pioneer and Toshiba have drives for.

Meaning that DVD-RAM was not the final standard agreed upon, and that newer drives based on the final DVD-RW standard will be the more common drive in the future.

The Creative DVD-RAM drive has been available for quite a while. As to the DVD-RW drives from Pioneer and Toshiba, I have yet to see them on the market. In either case, media for the drives are very expensive.

And you can bank on that having user-unfriendly copy protection mechansims. I'd also like to see the price drop quite a bit on these drives...they've been up there for a long time now.

I would suggest avoiding such drives at the moment to give things time to mature. I don't know of anyone who has either of these types of drives, so I think the adoption rate is very low.

dvd ram drives wil become fs in major stores this summer but right now its in the tests by manufactures

DVD-RAM drives are readily available here in Hong Kong....or at least the Creative one is. Funny thing is no one seems to be buying them, and if you want blank DVD-RAM disks, you need to specifically ask for them at the CDR/CDRW shops here. Most CDR/CDRW shops don't even carry them.

I have seen a DVD-R drive for sale, i think it was like pioneer. It burned at 1x (good thing that 1x is faster then a cds 1x). The only thing is i saw it selling for $4000. I think blank DVDs were also something like $35. Oh well lets just hope cheaper ones are coming soon, just like smp athlons.
