still good information coming along in this thread. The Pioneer drives look very tempting and I'm not really sure if i care about which will be the dominant Media Medium for awhile. I don't think one will lose support faster than i'll be upgrading anyway, so maybe i wont be so picky

Eug/Insane. Have either of you had the chance to use the OPTODISC DVD-R that Newegg sells? $50 for 50 DVD-R is pretty damn cheap. Just wondering if cheap=cheap disk too that don't play right. What sort of media do you guys recommend? Where do you purchase?

I've only burned two of them, and they both worked fine, even on my most picky DVD player (Apex AD-600A). (Got the discs from meritline.com).

However, reviews online of Optodisc DVD-R have been mixed. They seem to work a lot better than the low, low end stuff, but not as consistently as stuff like Apple or Pioneer media.

I have several Optodisc DVD-RAM as well, and they all work well. Reviews for Optodisc DVD-RAM have been very good, unlike for the DVD-R media.

I've used Optodisk for about 5 burns,

No problems yet. I am primarily using the Ritek v2.0 silvers, which I have found to be great...about 90 DVD-R's made with them so far.

Well i knew they were on the low-end, but i didn't know how much room you really had to work with Quality wise on DVD burns. They don't sound too bad, i guess it wouldn't hurt to blow $50

Thanks again

I've found that it is much much more important to use correct software and authoring process of the burn, than the disks themselves.

However, thats just me!

Nero is OK,

But it definetly will not do for high end authoring. Shoot me a PM or email and we can discuss it further if you wish.

BTW,

I will answer in the morning as I am about go play some cards for a couple 6 hours

Nero is not an authoring program. It really is for burning to disc stuff that has already been authored by something else.

As for the discs, they definitely do matter. With low end discs I will have serious problems with the burns, even if all my software is working correctly. ie. The exact setup will work fine with good quality discs, but if I use low quality discs they may not work properly. ie. Even if the burned low-end discs may play fine on my recorder and some players, they won't with others.

I've had problems with some cheap Generics, and some Princos.
