Depending on the dvd software you are using, you can use a program called DVDGenie to reset the region counter.. you can get it here

nortexvoid: You have to change the region or make a drive "regionless" if you want to watch a DVD movie that is produced/sold for a country other than the one that you bought your player in. For instance, my dvd player that I bought for my tv is region 1 (North America), so I can only play North American discs on it. If I want to watch a Japanese or European disc (or one of the others), then I've got to pop it into my computer's drive where I can play any region disc.

moden, thanks - that's what i thought...

but i questioned it as it seems to be a totally retarded/useless/idiotic feature....what is its purpose?...preventing international copyright infringement?...haha

pathetic.

DVD Genie (posted above by hominid skull) is what you're looking for. It bypasses the 5 change limit for unlimited region changes. Just make sure you go through DVD Genie to change it b/c otherwise after the 5th time the drive is permanently locked on that last region. Some of the newest 16x drives have modified hardware/firmware that won't allow a regionless hack. Here's a link for a list of firmware.

no. see a drive has a region. and the software has a region. the hacks that let you change it more then 5 times are for the software player. a drive that is region unlocked, it doesnt matter what region its set on, its kinda just cosmetic

DVD Genie can only help if the locking is software-only.

Some DVD-ROM drives are firmware region locked too. In this case, DVD Genie will not help you. This means that the 5 changes you have are stored in the actual DRIVE ITSELF. ie, it's not a software hack that is needed. You will need an actual Firmware upgrade if this is the case. You can pop over to
http://www.visualdomain.net to see a list of drives which are and are not region locked, and if they are, which firmware (if any) you can use to modify it. There is also a nifty utility there which you can run to see if your drive is locked or not...

I did this on my Creative Encore kit, made it regionless - then you can use another bit of software found there called Remote Selector to change regions etc... I also have a 'proper' DVD player - off the shelf it was Region 2 (for here in the UK) but I had it modified to play any region, and now I can watch all my Region 1, 2, and 4 discs (that are in my collection), perfectly okay on the one player.

I'd go for a proper DVD player though - combine that with a big TV and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound system and you'll be rocking!! No comparison to DVD-ROM displayed on your monitor...

Thanks for setting me straight on that one. I shoulda read up more closely on it

I actually think DVD's look better on a monitor, unless compared to a progressive scan player on a HDTV. But those two components alone cost more than an average computer (more than I'm willing to spend )
