I can't belive this is so hard to find, but every one I come by has some kind of catch and you have to buy it. They should seriously make this type of gimick illegal. It's a piss off to download a "free program" but yet you have to pay for it. (and they usually wait till you're half way through decoding before saying so)

Anyone know of a good free DVD rip program that's free? Don't need anything super advanced, I just want to be able to rip DVDs to like a 700MB AVI or something reasonble. Sometimes we rent a movie and I don't have time to watch it so I'd like to be able to rip it for watching when I get the time.

OK...first off, go find DVD Decrypter. They were shut down by a law suit about a year ago, but it still cracks EVERYTHING out there.

Then google DVD Shrink. That will allow you to compress it while also reauthoring it.

Great products mentioned by Rampant Android. I personally am now using the DVDShrink(free)/AnyDVD(not free) combo for my back-ups. As far as making AVI's of the resulting rips, I would download a program called AutoGK that will do the compression for you. It usually takes a little while to do the compression, but it is a set-up and go to sleep kind of program that doesn't require any input once you set-up your source and destination files and choose a few parameters. The simplest DIVX converter around! Good quality too, I regularly burn CD back-ups for trips since they are faster to burn and cheaper if I lose them or I just burn a DVD with several of the movies I want to watch burned on it if I am travelling light.

Thanks everyone for the responses, I'll look into what has been posted. I tried DVD decrypter and it did not do what I want (single AVI file) but I'm guessing the next step would be to use DVD shrink on it?

Exactly...if you ripped to IFO files, find the IFO files for the video you want (you can probably go by size...the extra features won't be as big as the movie itself...same goes for the audio.) and drop them into DVD Shrink under reauthoring.

If you ripped a ISO, mount it to a virtual drive, and run DVD Shrink.

As for AnyDVD, I used it too...but my trial ran out, and I'm a cheap bum. Awesome program though, if you are wiling to pay for something to remove the protection, that's it (also lets you skip the frigging FBI warnings and other junk they FORCE you to watch.)

Too bad the millenium rights act and some other law conflict on whether you are allowed to copy DVDs you already own for backup purposes (I mean, we payed for it already, its our. Let us do what we want with it already.)

EDIT: whoops...DVD Shrink doesn't do avis....oops.

WRONG! DVD Decrypter was shut down by Sony. It cannot crack any of the new titles from Sony using the ARCHOS protection scheme (e.g. Bewitched, Lords of Dogtown, Stealth, etc.).

Go search doom9.org for more info.

DVDShrink is awesome, i hope they never get shut down.

Why convert DVD to avi? U lose quality, and cant watch on dvd player in your living room. I encode my dvds so it can fit on a 4.7GB single side dvd, can play on computer or ps2 or tv.

Concur... DVD Decrypter definately does NOT decode some of the newer DVDs coming out (I have already noticed several), and since there will be no more updates to DVD Decrypter, the list of movies it cannot decode will only increase.

AFAIK, there are no free decrypting programs that do everything, but I do know there is a pay-version that combines current DVD Decrypting with shrinking all at the press of one button... that's DVD Fab Express. Put source disk in reader, put blank disk in burner press one button and it decodes, shrinks (if need be) and burns all at once... it can also decode to the HD. The program has regular updates (like DVD Decrypter used to), but it is a pay program.

You can try the program for FREE here:
http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-fab-express.htm

The free version burns FULL discs for as long as the trial lasts (I think 30 days).

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&...ore&defl=en&q=define:Video+compression

Definitions of Video compression:

1. Data reduction and compression of an analog television signal into a digital stream. It is used on SIRIUS to allow about ten channels to be broadcasted through a single transponder (33MHz).
www.nsab-sirius.com/list.asp

2. Reduces the number of bits required to store and/or transmit digital media. Compressed video can be transmitted more economically over a smaller carrier.
www4.dogus.edu.tr/bim/bil_kay/network/intranets/ch55.htm

3. The process through which a complete video file is reduced in size. Video Compression algorithms take advantage of the fact that there is minimal difference from "one" frame to the next. The first frame is encoded and then the sequence of differences between frames. This is also known as "inter-frame" coding or "3D coding".
www.webvideo4u.co.uk/resources/v.html

4. Encoding digital video to take up less storage space and transmission bandwidth.
www.irisa.fr/armor/lesmembres/Mohamed/Thesis/node9.html

5. Video compression deals with the compression of digital video data.Video compression is necessary for efficient coding of video data in video file formats and streaming video formats. To be accurate, what people call Video compression is more accurately referred to as video data rate reduction - the methods used usually require discarding data (lossy compression) rather than just reducing the required bandwidth (lossless compression. ...

I believe the OP wants to rip the dvd's into avi files, not copy them to another dvd. In that case, I use either of the two programs: DVDx or xMPEG. They each have their advantages, sometimes one works and the other doesnt with a particular dvd. Both programs let you rip a dvd directly into a avi file. DVDx is easier to use, but xMPEG has more features and options, so try em both.

To get a good overview of all your options, go poke around doom9.org

Edit: Already mentioned, sorry for not looking closer.

For those who wonder the main reason I want to make an AVI / Mpeg is if we rent a movie but I don't have time to watch it I just copy it to my HDD to view later. Also I have this DVD that won't work in our DVD player (looks like a tape with bad tracking) but works in my computer, so I've been thinking if I convert it to a video file such as AVI then burn it as a DVD it may work. Tried using DVD decrypter then DVD shrink to make an ISO but the end result was the same, resulting in a coaster (well it works in the PC, just not the DVD player). I think it may be because it was burned as PAL and not NTSC, but I'm not sure... I think dvd decrypter would fix that though.

Also speaking of NTSC and PAL, I always thought NTSC was what US and Canada uses, but XMPEG says it's used in Europe/Asia area... so which one really is for Canada?

Also, when I'm using this program, do I need to decrypt, or does saving as a file automaticly disable any encryption? Can't see how it could be embeded in a video file like AVI or Mpeg but figured I'd ask to be sure.

Xmpeg decrypts the disc also. Not sure if it can crack as many schemes as dvddecrypter, but from my experience it works with most if not all discs.

It isn't exactly "legal" to make a copy of a rented movie to watch later.

The hardest part is going from a DVD to a file. There is a huge conversion process going from a DVD to an AVI file. Although there are solutions... it's still a sometimes difficult process.

Possible solutions...

1. Rip the DVD to your hard drive using DVD Shrink. It decrypts the DVD and recreates the files from the DVD. It creates a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive, and fills it with the VIDEO_TS.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO and VTS_01_1.VOB files from the DVD. Then you can watch the files with a software DVD player such as Cyberlink PowerDVD. It will play the ripped DVD files right from your hard drive.

Cyberlink PowerDVD example

or

2. Burn the files from DVD Shrink to a DVD using Nero. By this point you'll definately be breaking the law... but you'll have a copy of the DVD you can watch later on a home DVD player.
