A few months ago my psu was on the fritz. My pc sometimes would not turn on when I hit the power button. Sometimes it would, but increasingly it wouldn't until it finally would not turn on at all. Long story short I replaced that psu with a seasonic s12. When I put my system back together I noticed that my dvd-rom drive no longer worked. It had power plugged in to it, but the bios didn't recognize it and none of the buttons and lights worked. It's like it was getting power, but it wasn't using it.
Well I guess my old psu shorted it out or something since it no longer works. I hooked up an old 4x cdrw drive and it worked so I'm positive this drive was dead. I decided to take the drive apart because my battlefield 2 dvd was inside and there was no other way to get it out than to unscrew it and take it apart.
Being the investigative kind of person I am I wanted to know what exactly was broken inside the drive. I took it all apart without breaking anything. I took the pcb out and looked over it. I couldn't find anything out of the ordinary until I saw this part on the back of the pcb. It looked like it had some corrosion. I wiped most of it off, but it looks like the ic chip overloaded or something. I noticed some tiny numbers, so I decided to scan it and see what they read because they are too tiny to see with the naked eye. I don't know what it means, but it looks like the chip died. I don't know what the chip is for though. I guess there's no way to repair this thing.
Time to buy a new drive. I think I'll get a nec dvd-rw drive.
