DVD-ROM vs CD-ROM

I'm debating wether to get a CD-ROM live I've always had or a DVD-ROM.

How does a 52x CD-ROM compare to a 16x DVD-ROM. What does 16x DVD = to CD? I'm wondering if this will slow down installation off CDs using a DVD-ROM.

i have no use for cd roms
i always use dvd drives as they are cheap
but the faster cdroms seem to not last as long in my experience

my dvd is a 16x40 which i prefer. the slower (40vs52) speed seems to avoid a lot of read errors i have seen with 52x but this is only my opinion based on my expierences ymmv

i'm thinkin about buying a new dvd-rom drive as well...perhaps I should wait for dvd+r/rw drives to come down in price, I don't know...but could you suggest a good dvd-rom drive ?

I've been using a dvd drive for well over a year now. First thing I noticed was how much quieter it was compared to my old cdrom. It has had a lot of use, and has held up well. Better than my last two cdroms. I have no idea if other dvd drives are quiet, or if i got lucky. Would like to know if this holds true for all dvd drives.

1x dvd rotational speed is equivalant to 2.7x for cdrom speed. so the 16x dvd rom reads at (16 * 2.7) = around 43x cdrom speed. i have a 16x/48x dvd drive. guess its close enough. therefore techinically a 52x cdrom drive will read cds faster than a 16x dvd drive reading cds. but going from 52x down to 48x speed is minute. average is more or less the same since the 52x , 48x speed or whatever are what the laser reads at the very outmost of the cd.

Most of the 16x DVD-Roms are rated at 48x now... And from the research I've done the LiteOn 16x DVD-Rom is the Creme of the Crop when it comes to DVD-Rom drives... I'd recommend a DVD-Rom.

Either a Lite-On or a Toshiba DVD-Rom drive would be an excellent choice.

Lite-On's at newegg.com

Toshiba's at newegg.com

I hope this helps

I second the liteon.

I had a 56x CDrom for a few years and let me tell you one thing - IT IS VERY VERY LOUD.

If the GeforceFX was the Dustblower, then this was like "papa blower"

Stick with the DVDRom as they are much quieter and I've noticed that it holds better sustained rates of transfer...that and my fast cdrom died atleast 3 times (I have never bought I/O Magic Since) so I'd be wary.

Been using my Toshiba SDM-1502 for almost 2 years now...very fast and quiet...I prefer it over my Lite-On CD-RW which is rated at 52x.

I'd say the Pioneer 16x s106 is currently the most widely used on Anandtech. Personally, the drive has had MUCH faster spin up time than my old actima cd drive and is also very quiet. On the plus side, you can flash the bios to disable the region lock

I'm a long time Toshiba fan, but lately I've been real impressed with Pioneer. If you live in the US, the Pioneer DVD-120 over at newegg.com is an excellent choice.

I've gotta really recommend Lite-On's DVD drives. I've had one of their 16/40's for about 6 months now and I'm in love with it. Very fast DVD and CD read speeds, and pretty quiet to boot. As for Toshiba, I had one of their 16/40's for about 3 months and got fed up with it due to the fact that it was slower than molasses. It took a good 8-10 seconds just to recognize a disc, and its speed at ripping DVDs for DivX conversion never went above 1.2x (whereas the Lite-On pulls a solid 3-4x). I've also owned a Pioneer slot-loader, I loved it right up until the loading mechanism broke and it would no longer be able to engage a disc. Now that I've owned a Lite-On, I doubt I'll ever go back to Pioneer or Toshiba.
