DVD Sound and Video Choppy as hell

I recently built a system for a friend that includes

a Duron 600
112 MB RAM
8X DVD
Built in Video, sound and ethernet

Why is the dvd video so choppy? Is it the Video card? Or lack of one? Should I get an agp card or a dvd decoder card or what?

Have you enabled DMA on the DVD Drive?

yah! It would be the lack of a decent video card. You need at least a TNT2 32MB (or 16MB) for decent playback, also a fast CPU - Yours should be good enough. Make sure there are NO programs running in the background (do ctrl-alt-del).

Yeah DMA is on.. I tried both ways, it makes absolutely no difference.

Try different Software.
Try different IDE position.

The video card could be a factor. However, I have a PII 350 with a built-in STB Velocity Riva128ZX 8mb video card, and the DVD playback was decent. It wasn't choppy at all. If your video card is at least comparable to mine or better, then it could be something else.

Sound and video choppy, eh? Have you checked for any conflicts? Updated device drivers? You know the generic basic questions...

Yeah, i thought the problem would have been with the Direct Memory Access (DMA). However, i also realized that you have a 112 Mb of memory, one thing i realized with many of the graphical interfaced programs such as games, tv tuning, and dvd playing on my computer is that you need plenty of memory, especially if you don't have a good video card. I used to have 128 mb, but my games were still choppy. However, once i got 256 mb everything worked perfect. Basically DMA, just accesses your memory inorder to make devices more efficient. So i recommed that you get atleast 128 mb more, the more the better. Peace!
