DVD to VideoNow Player - For Noobs

My son has a VideoNow player that can play movies that have been burned to special disks. I need to convert DVD movies into one of the supported formats (AVI MPEG-1, ASF, WMV, QuickTime). What is the best way to go about this and what format do you suggest to convert to? Once I have the movie in one of the supported formats, I have to use the software that comes with the unit to burn the special disks which hold 450 MB each.

Doesn't Windows have a free WMV creator?

I used DVD Shrink to rip the DVD. It created a number of separate files. Now I need to convert the files into one of the formats listed above. I snooped around in Windows Movie Maker, but couldn't find anything that would convert the file into WMV format.

Appreciate any help to explain this whole process.

for conversion from dvd to avi i suggest: Fairuse Wizard
for mpeg-1: dvd2vcd


I never convert to those other formats. Mpeg-1 is pretty old and offers less compression than avi. for avi, i think set-top boxes are limited in what codecs they support. Probably, if you use Fairuse it would be a safe bet to stick with Divx for video codec and MP3 for audio codec, but you'd best check your manual. if possible, x264 will give the best compression. Or Xvid is thought to have an edge over Divx.

And an alternative to Fairuse, if you don't like it for some reason, is Auto GK.
