I remember a couple of years ago them nerfing the software due to lawsuits by the MPAA. Is it back up to full functionality?

AFAIK that only affected their full ripping suite and this software has remained fully functional for what it does, which is similar to Anydvd HD.

So this is something similar to anydvd that will allow for ripping of dvd/Blu-ray Discs that you own?

That's a pretty sweet deal!

From what I can tell, this is more of an "unlock" for digital rights management (DRM), to allow your other existing software to work with protected stuff.

So it's not an actual utility you'd use for ripping.

Anyone get this to work with VLC? Or could you elaborate on how to rip a Bluray using this passkey along with whatever other freeware you use?

I've had great luck ripping with Handbrake. It doesn't support encrypted ripping out of the box, but there is a plugin that you can get. It has worked flawlessly for me so far - rip straight from DVD to MP4, and you can use presets for various devices. The plugin is called "libdvdcss". I'm sure that DVDFab has more features, but this has done the job for me the last few years. I've thought about buying one of the commercial DVD rippers over the years, but the price is usually too high - $50 for just the ripper, and the price goes way up for adding a few extra features.

Yeah, this works exactly like AnyDVD. It's an app that runs and allows you to rip direct from protected media (dvd or bluray) using whatever software you want, Handbrake probably being the most popular. Works good for allowing you to rip your media to a media server or to make backups of the physical media.

Basically, you install this, then use VidCoder or similar free app to extract the movies and transcode into MP4 for your media server, then archive your original Bluray discs in a safe place.

I like VidCoder, but I really wish there was something out there that could leverage using the GPU to transcode without too much hassle.

Nice, it works! I used to use the free version of DVDFab HD to backup my stuff, by my copy was old and expired.

DesiPower (and all): Passkey has the built-in ability to rip the full contents of a Blu-ray (or DVD) disc to your hard drive (1) as a folder structure or (2) as an .ISO disc image. Put in the disc, right-click Passkey in your system tray, and select your ripping option.

Passkey doesn't appear to support movie-only ripping, so you will need to use a different tool for that once you've decrypted and copied the disc contents to your hard drive. I use the free beta version of "BD Rebuilder" ( http://www.jdobbs.com ) for Blu-ray, and the old workhorse "DVD Shrink" for DVD.

I played around and backed up 2 of my movies last night. Passkey did not auto-scan the second disc when I inserted it. I had to right-click Passkey in my System tray and choose "exit", and then restart Passkey. It then scanned the disc and I was able to rip it to my hard drive.

Nice, thanks for all the info! Just wondering, have you used Passkey in this manner to archive a Blu-ray onto a hard drive, and then play it from the hard drive? If so, could you access the disc menus and other extra content as though you were using a hardware blu-ray player? If so, what software player did you use?

The last time I tried DVDFab HD decryptor to copy a Blu-ray folder structure to a hard drive, I couldn't figure out a way to access the menus and extra content, and instead had to just locate the biggest movie file and play it, so I'm interested in software that can access the folder structure like you inserted a disc, with the menus and selectable options etc.

Power DVD will do this, but my installed copy is currently semi-broken and won't play Blu-ray discs or HighDef content anymore. It only plays DVD and standard Def content. It keeps telling me that I need to install an update but it won't accept the update (I haven't bothered to fix because it's time to wipe/reload the machine). In Power DVD, select menu "Movie > Open movie file from hard drive" and then point it at the folder that holds the ripped BD/DVD content.

Just a FYI - granted I'm a noob at this stuff, but I did install this one the one machine I have a BRD in (my HTPC). I also happened to have rented a movie last night for the kids to watch, and completely forgetting that I installed it I popped the movie in and expected it to just go ahead and autoplay, but to my surprise MediaCenter just barfed saying I didn't have the appropriate software to play back the media. After exiting MCE I noticed that PassKey was scanning the disc, so I cancelled it, disabled PassKey and restarted MCE and all was well.

Just a heads up for anybody that ends up in the same predicament as I did.

I can confirm that this allows on-the-fly Blu Ray playback with Media Player Classic.

Thanks, OP.

You submit your email, and they send you the keyfile via email. Then you just download the Passkey software and use the keyfile to activate. I'm willing to bet you should be able to wait and activate with the keyfile whenever you want.

already did once, just wondering what I'd have to do to be able to reinstall in the future.
