On the same site, the 4X Riteks come out to about $45.50 for 25, shipped- if you want a safe brand, that's not a bad deal.

MeritLine is a good site, but if I remember correctly, DVDPro = Princo. Not a very well thought of brand.

is anything wrong with the dvdpro brand? With all due respect to the venerable ritek , I've made 6 coasters from a 50 dvd-r spindle of riteks on my Sony dru 510a and I still have 15 blanks left.
What are the brands to look for? I'm just starting out with dvd burning

I ordered a 100 pack of these from Meritline and just received them today. I got four 25 packs, and they are white topped Princo's. Have not tried burning anything with them yet.

There is a $8.00 off 100 Pack coupon around that you should be able to find pretty easy.

I've had good luck with this site, which has 2X rated DVD-R's for $83.00/100, shipped. I don't know what brand they are--maybe Princo--but I've had zero problems burning at 2X, and all my players read them fine.

I have a Pioneer A04, with original BIOS, and the blanks are detected as 2X, so this isn't some "BIOS trick" to overclock some 1X blanks.

Always refer to DVDRHelp.com for info...

I bought a 50-pack of DVDR-Pro DVD-R's from supermedia.com for 0.89/each...ended up being 1x DVDs. Its annoying waiting an hour to burn on a 4x drive - sure wish I knew ahead of time.

I've heard that Sony and Ritek isn't as compatible as Pioneer and Ritek.

I've never owned a Sony DVD burner, so I'm just repeating what I've heard.

MIDIman, check out that yesbuy.net site I referenced above -- it has 4X blanks for $89.00/100. I believe that price includes shipping.

With a 2X burner myself, I can't guarantee the quality of those 4X blanks, but like I said, I've had zero problems after maybe 70 burns of the 2X blanks. I've ordered from this company before, and they usually ship same-day, and I get my orders within 2-3 business days even with the default free shipping.

dvdpro's are princos. and out of all the dvd media out there princo's are like 3 out of 5. They supposedly don't last long and for that reason I ended up buying leaddata's (Accu's). I have a thread @ chubby wallet called Official DVD Media blah blah...got lots of links in there but I don't know if im allowed to post a link from here to there so i'll leave it at that. I got my leaddata's for 100 spindle @ 80bux. only 1X / 2X but i'd rather burn at 2X than try to play something I burned a few months later and have it not work.
