Hi all. This one is realy basic but I'm just wanting to ensure that I covered all the bases before telling someone to take her system in.
Friend of mine has a problem that her DVDROM/CD-RW drive disaapeared in Windows (XP Home Ed.). I troubleshooted this issue with her for a bit tonight and in Device manager it shows that the Device Drivers have loaded but Windows cannnot find the device. The Error is:
Code 41
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
Recommended resolution (from the MS Knowledge Base):
A driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This error occurs when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device.
If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device.
If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer version of the driver might be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard.
I had her try this and also just removing the device in Device Manager, Rebooting and it should see the device and load the defaul wondows drivers for it.
Upon boot, it will look like it's trying to install new hardware but then results in Device Manager with Error Code 41.
Drive still has power and it's drive drawer works.
Most that was done was she uninstalled some game prior to the drive disappearing.
I was suspecting perhaps a cable became loose internally or perhaps something happend to the drive it'self or the interface on the MoB.
Cannot tell you the brand of computer and if I were present to open the case, I may not even be posting this.....I'd check the cables and then test the interfaces with a drive I have myself. But I'm in the US and she's in England...though, hey....good reason to fly over for a visit, right?
Just wanted to check here since I seared around the forums and didn't see an answer to this and well MS really is of little help and was looking for additional things she coudl try without her having to take the system in. She had moved it yesterday to a different spot in her flat and I did think possible loose cable but then that uninstalled game issue came up as I know uninstalling some softwares types (usually CD burning) can cause an issue like this from time to time.
Any help would be appreciated (I may try walking her through opening her case up tomorrow).
