What do they mean by this:

<< *This selection is not available as a sponsor reward or as an enrollment selection. >>

Could you still get DVDs that say this as the Commitment purchases after you have made the initial purchases?

What that means Webley is that you can't get it as one of the .49 selections or as a free one if you refer a friend. This is usually said about really expensive stuff (box sets or special edition stuff)

I have done this deal also. It worked perfectly. Made me want to start a DVD collection.. now I am just waiting for enough good DVDs to appear before doing it again.

Are all the "clear" DVDs from CH.. CHcopied DVDs?

why would you bump an old thread like this?

and why would you whine about it?

Thanks for the bump Hank. I missed this one the first time around, and I just joined Columbia House w/o any of the special codes =(

Oh well, at least I can tell my friends and know what to do for my next membership...

I'll give this a little bump....

Honestly, after reading the first 30 or so messages, I wanted to say that this was one of the most civil threads I've ever seen. Everyone helping everyone out. Everyone realizing the hard work from the great folks at DVDtalk. It's a great thing to behold!

But yeah...I did this deal a little while ago. They still don't have Superbit titles, do they? (I wanna buy Crouching Tiger and Fifth Element, but only on Superbit....)

Agreed... if Columbia has the DVDs you want (their selection is vast and growing), then signing up for the intro deal is great! Provided you then cancel your membership... you can then sign right back up and average less than $10 a DVD. I use it to stack up on $30 DVDs like Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, Doctor Zhivago, etc... I'm about to sign up again to work on my collection some more.

What confuses me, and yes I have read the threads, is the fufillment issue. You have to buy x number in x months at $19.95 or more. If that's the case, why is there so much mention of MSRP. The same applies for the enrollment feature. MSRP means nothing nowadays. It seems the author of the FAQ thinks that to "maxmize" your savings you should stick it to CH but choosing dvd's at high MSRP. Hmm Heat or Oceans 11? Well one has an MSRP of $35 and the other $37. I better go with the $37 one. Oh wait, they are both < $20 at your local Best Buy or Costco. I think that people shouldn't think they will really get dvd's at ~$8 a pop. That is only possible if you choose dvd's based on price and not on taste or preference. I will be joining this club but I won't be expecting perfect gains.

True... some movies have a high MSRP and a low street value... but there are many with a high MSRP and a high street value. For example Lawrence of Arabia limited edition is $27+ at most places... you can effectively grab it from CH for $10 delivered.

The fulfillment titles are where the MSRP is important. The thread is really telling you to take high MSRP titles for the enrollment, and save your low MSRP choices for the fulfillment selections. If you don't want any $19.95 movies, than you will end up paying more total for the deal. But I usually need to buy one or two fulfillments and have no trouble finding titles I like for $19.95 (the minimum fulfillment price). What the thread on DVDtalk is saying is that it would be silly to take two $20 MSRP movies for your intro, then buy two $35 MSRP movies for fulfillment... it would defeat the hot deal.

All in all, I find this much easier than most hot deals listed here... where you have to PM, use a competitors coupon, send in MIR, then sell half of it on Ebay to recoup $$$. The CH deal is straight up, no hassles... you just need to research the MSRP of the DVDs you want in order to maximize your $$$/DVD ratio.

Bottom line: if you can find two DVDs you want at the $19.95 MSRP, then you can get 5 more at any MSRP while still averaging less than $10/DVD for all 7 DVDs. Simply sign up, pick your 5 DVDs with high MSRPs, then when it comes time to pay the piper, buy your two $19.95 DVDs, then cancel your membership. You can sign up the next day and do it again. The number of DVDs you have to buy at $19.95 vs the number of intro DVDs at any MSRP varies with the different codes listed on DVDtalk. Usually there is one promotion code that is obviously better than the rest.

Clarification: Does CH sell dvd's at prices other than MSRP? If not, isn't it just the price then?

It doesn't make any difference what you can buy the DVDs for at other places. That's only if you want to pick the Best Deal using CH prices. Anyone can get the DVDs for under $10 each as long as your "enrollment titles" are priced at the lowest one possible. THat's why you choose the higher priced ones for free and the lower priced ones to actually pay for.

It's not that confusing. Head over to DVDtalk.com and go to the Clubs area and there's a lot more info over there.
