If you have a 1-layer DVD(<4.7GB), then use Mode>ISO>Read that will save a copy on your Hard Drive. Then to burn it, chose Mode>ISO>Write. DVD Decrypter can burn ISO images.

Thanks TriggerH,

I think I have a 2-layer DVD because when I just run DVDDecrypter, it decrypts the DVD to my HD, however the files are well over 4.7GB (in this case 8+ GB in size) then when I go to burn the file in DVDCrypt it tells me that my source file is too big for my blank DVD.

However, DVDDecrypt does find my DVD-RW drive okay and identifies it correctly. Now I just need to figure out how to AutoISO3.1 to shrink the DVD to a usable size.

I tried AutoISO to get it to create an ISO for me, it opens DVDShrink, I run the encrypting analysis, then go to backup and have it backup to my HD, after that process is completed, all I find on my HD is the directory I specified for the backup and the two subdirs, for Video and Audio.

I'm not sure how to get DVDDEcrypt to read from that file and I can't seem to find the ISO file that AutoISO was supposed to create for me via DVDShrink.

If anyone has a quick tip for me great, but I don't want to waste space in this thread for my tech problems. If you have a quick fix for me, I'd greatly appreciate you letting me know.

Whether it is posted here in this thread or via PM to me, I will leave to you.

In the meantime, I will also head off to one of the DVD forums to see if they can help me out.

Thanks to everyone for your patience and advice.

I got a coaster with DVD shrink 3.1.4 so I just started over selecting a custom compression level about 10% lower than the automatic level. It burned with no problems.

10% lower... Doesn't that kill the quality?

Guys, do you notice a quality difference when using dvd shrink instead of other software such as TMPG or CCE? DVD Shrink is a lot easier and faster, so I would prefer doing that unless it's a huge quality difference.

I love DVDShrink! Here is my question. Is there a software that allows me to play the content of the VIDEO folder on my harddrive as if it is on a DVD? I can use PowerDVD to play one of the 1GB files, but it stops when that file is finished. Thanks!

Instead of pointing your DVD software to the file, just point it to the folder. That's what I do with PowerDVD and it opens the files under the folder in order.

I had to come back with this update to all who had helped me earlier.

I d/led DVDShrink 3.1.14 and tried it out.

When I tried to backup an older DVD, I kept getting a Copy Protection Error, with some note about an I/O communication error??

Based on input from here and some of the DVD forums, I tried this instead.

Used DVDDecrypter to create an ISO of the DVD, then mounted the ISO on my HD using Daemon Tools, then using DVDShrink, opened the ISO (on the virtual DVD Drive) and shrunk it to burnable size, then back to DVDDecrpyter to actually take the "shrunk" files (basically all the stuff in the Video subdir) and burned it onto my blank DVD - and I think it works (or at least it did for my first try - on my Hulk DVD that I got from Kraft- yet another ATT hot deal!).

So, thanks for the help. Unfortunately, I never was able to get AutoISO to work, since I had an OEM version of Nero that would not work with my DVD-RW drive. But I ended up using the parts that AutoISO connects to get thru this.

Anyone have any idea why there's an I/O error - Copy Protection Error when using DVDShrink with certain DVDs??

Haven't experienced that myself.

It depends on the amount of compression and what artifacts you're willing to ignore. I use DVDShrink on movies less than 2hrs only and just keep either the movie only or movie + menu (yes it's possible with some extra tools and work). If the movies over 2hrs I use CCE.

Borg - cannot verify this, but I had the same issue. Here is what I found out.

PC 1 - No DVD playing software ever installed. Got the copy protection error when using DVD Shrink 3.x on multiple DVDs.

PC's 2 & 3 - DVD playing software installed, same DVDs ripped in fine.

Make your own assumptions from here. This is just what I experienced.

First DVD I tried to rip with 3.14 gave me the error...so I tried the latest version of DVDecrypter which told me the region on my drive wasn't set which could cause errors with some programs and would I like to set it? So I set my drive to region 1. Then went back and tried the DVD again with DVDshrink 3.1.4 and it worked fine.

Scenario: I'm using the LiteOn 851s with fw: GS08. This is my first burner (nOOb) and am using Imation (Ricoh) 4x+R's for my media. Software I'm using is DVD Shrink 3.1.2 and Nero 5.5.10.54. What does upgrading to 3.1.4 make available that 3.1.2 doesn't support? BTW, with my current setup, am I able to do things like HD Burn, 8x, etc.?

Mr. Evil, Thanks for the feedback. In my case, my pc has both Sonic-DVD (came with the Liteon 811S DVD-RW drive) and PowerDVD installed. I also opened DVDDecrypter and did not get any warnings about setting the region for my DVD-RW drive. From what I can tell, I had set it earlier to Region 1 when I first tried to run DVDShrink.

I may try to go back to an older version of DVDShrink, but I'm not sure if that will help since I think some of my problems with using DVDShrink are its interface with Nero. Since my Nero is an OEM type tied to my Mitsumi CD-RWdrive, even after I updated Nero to 5.5.1.54 (or whatever the latest update for 5.5 is), Nero will not work for a non-Mitsumi drive, so my Liteon 811S DVD-RW is SOL (out of luck).

To clarify, the exact error message that I received was as follows (this was after I had loaded the DVD in the the DVD-RW drive, opened it with DVDShrink 3.1.14 and ran analysis on it and then tried to backup the DVD onto my HD:

DVDShrink encountered an error and can't continue

Copy Protection Error

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

If anyone has run into this and solved it, your input would be greatly appreciated.

DVDShrink encountered an error and can't continue

I got the same message with one of my dvds.

The only difference is that my drive (BTC 1004x +/-) is region 0.

This happens all the time...if you never have played a dvd in your dvd player the region in windows is UNSET and you need to set it. Go to Device Manager | double click your DVD-Burner or DVD-ROM and choose Advanced Settings. Your allowed to change it 5 times.

Curiously enough, that setting appears in my virtual dvd drives.

In a post in this thread someone mentioned you can play the dvd if it's on your harddrive with PowerDVD by pointing to the folder. I tried this and it didn't work for me. Is there something i'm not doing correctly? I have to say that dvdshrink is great! I've just started dvd recording and am using it and dvdEncrypter to see how i like them each. thanks for the info about this program!

My Spanish speaking friend asked me how to backup a dvd movie but have the voice sound track in Spanish. Is it just the subtitles that offer Spanish in an English speaking movie?

Depends on the movie and what regional version it is. Check the back of the dvd case and see what audio tracks and subtitles it has included with the dvd. Sometimes they have spoken languages sometime just subtitles. A typical region 1 movie might say: English 5.1 dolby, French 2.0 dolby, English/french/spanish subtitles. Generally region 1 is also sold in canada and often has french subtitles and/or french soundtracks. But again, this is different for EVERY SINGLE MOVIE and every region version of that movie too. You MUST check the dvd case on the back where it tells features, or check some place online. But online sometimes has inaccurate info. For instance if its a region 1 title for sale in USA you can probably check amazon.com for info on the features a specific dvd has. I think region 2 is europe, you might be able to find the ones sold in britain on amazon.co.uk and the ones sold in germany at amazon.de etc. As for the mechanics of selecting the track/subtitle to backup with I dont know. But generally there's a way to do it.

I couldn't notice any difference, but I have not set up any discriminating A/B tests yet.
