Is there something i'm not doing correctly? I have to say that dvdshrink is great! I've just started dvd recording and am using it and dvdEncrypter to see how i like them each. thanks for the info about this program!

Did you point it to the Video_ts folder or the movie folder containing the Video and Audio TS folders. If you point it to the Video_ts folder it should work.

10% lower... Doesn't that kill the quality?

Guys, do you notice a quality difference when using dvd shrink instead of other software such as TMPG or CCE? DVD Shrink is a lot easier and faster, so I would prefer doing that unless it's a huge quality difference.

I couldn't notice any difference, but I have not set up any discriminating A/B tests yet.

I just used a mixed compression on my DVD, the movie no comp, but additional features compressed it to 80 % instead of recommended 96% and the quality did not suffer at all. So I guess at least at 80% compression, it works without any loss in quality.

I wonder if that is along the lines of what "Deep Analysis" does.

Honest remark that I never thought about it but it makes sense.

no problems here, I think I've used this version at least a dozen times in the past week, NO issues what so ever...I love the shutdown feature after burning...throw one on the fire, and off to bed!

Was very hot deal! Loved it for over a year with no probs on dozens of backups until last night.

New release Lion King 1 1/2 may exhibit newest prevention for backups with dvdshrink. Backup either full disk or movie-only displays ?audio file not supported? for main movie file. Can?t get dvdr, dvdrw or file to play audio(video is fine) no matter what I do. It may be time for another revision.
Any ideas/work arounds?

Did you try decrypting with DVD decrypter? Some movies that cannot be ripped using shrink, DVD decrypter works. Then on the Hard drive you can use the DVDshrink on those files.

download at my site if you wish mrbass.org/dvdshrink

Version 3.1.5 - 8 Feb 2004
---------------------------

Added warning in case of re-authoring menus: reminder that they will be converted into video clips, not menus.

Fixed closed captions: no longer stripped from output files.

Fixed navigation command for "no subpicture" in re-author. Also now use separate commands for default audio and subpicture as easier for IFOedit users.

Changed default streams GUI in re-author mode.

Fixed various problems in still-picture encoder:
- PTS/DTS set correctly
- timestamp of sequence end code recorded in NV_PCK
- 3:2 pulldown disabled

Fixed checking of DVD files when opened in "open files" mode.

Fixed ISO-639 code for Hebrew to "iw".

Automatically stop video preview when doing quick analysis in re-author mode.

Improved support for mousewheel in DVD browser view.

Backup proceeds without warning if total compilation size is within 128KB of the target size. This helps prevent warnings if automatic compression is slightly inaccurate (due to floating
point rounding error).

Added menu option to turn on/off "combined shared titles" in full-disc mode.

Changes to application startup code, attempt to fix crash on some windows 2000 systems.

Added Carlitus/Mandraker toolbar buttons.

Changed compiler switches to optimize for Pentium systems.

Changed all spellings of "disk" to "disc" (except in the case of "hard disk").

Fixed small bug in main window where selected menus could fail to deselect.

I've been using DVD shrink for a while now and love it. i've found that most movies compressed even at 60% are still great in quality considering the source is so good. I've had good success putting 2 movies on a single DVD+R. I put Second hand Lions and Anger management on a single DVD with compression set at around 65. The results were good. I only wish DVDShrink would incorporate a way to add a basic menu to a reauthered DVD. In my case when adding 2 movies to a single disk I need to navigate between the 2 movies by changing the track with my DVD players remote. I could rip the movies with decrypter, add a menu in TMPEGEnc Author, then compress with DVDShrink, but that is a much longer process and probably not worth the extra time. Thats the only way i've found to add a menu. Would be nice if I could rip, add menu, and shrink in DVDShrink.

I even tried adding 3 shorter movies (Aprox 90 min each), but in order for that to work I would've needed to set the compression at around 45. DVDShrink wouldn't let me go that low. I'm not sure what the min compression is, and I'm sure 40% might be kinda ugly, but I'd at least like to try it.

BTW, I use DVDShrink with my 8X Optorite. I've been burning everything at 8X on 4X Imation RicohJPN01 media.

I've just started to do dvd backups/recordings in the last week. I've had great success using dvdDecrypter and dvdShrink. One question.....if you take a color movie that's 105 minutes long and another color movie that's 105 minutes long, why would one be about half the size of the other? Are they using a compression method on the one with the shorter data? I've encounted this several times. One i can copy with no compression at all while the other does need compression. thanks, robert

Are you sure you are just copying the movie track itself, or are you also copying the extras? I've never encountered such a problem when just extracting the movie track itself. But certain DVD's have more fluff and extras than others. So even though the film length is the same, the DVD itself might be loaded with enough extras (Alternate Endings, Foreign soundtracks, music videos, etc).

I usually use dvdDecrypter and select all files and put them on my harddrive. This way i can include or exclude any extras later when i do a burn later with dvdShrink. I even check how large the original dvds are to see how much data is on them by checking them through properties when they are in the recorder drive. I believe i'm doing everything correct when comparing 2 color movie dvds with the same running time. robert

Could someone host 3.15 directly? Whenever I try from MrBass or Doom9 I get some sort of "unauthorized download" message.

Many thanks,

Joe

Try reading the FAQ on that website. If I remember it correctly, it have something to do with Ur IE setting that you get that error message.

I did too, till I read that you have to disable 'browser privacy' in Norton Internet Security. If you have Norton, check it out.

here's the info from doom9.org that told me to disable this setting:

Unauthorized download

We're sorry, but this downlod request cannot be authorized. There could be several reasons for this:

1) You clicked on a link on a site that is not part of the Doom9 domains. In this case the URL in your browser would not contain doom9.org or doom9.net. We do not allow that kind of external hotlinking. This site creates a great deal of traffic and it's hard to find a good hosting. We will not provide the bandwith for other sites, too so that they can have a great software archive without having to host and pay for it. Please visit Doom9.org and you can download all the files you want.

2) You're using a download manager. Download managers usually offer to search for alternative download locations. While this is nice for the user, it's bad for the webmaster because it could be that a download which originated on another site could theoretically still be downloaded from this site, without anybody knowing. But there's a solution to this problem:

Set up your download manager to send a HTTP referer, and when you click on a link on the Doom9 site the download will be authorized. Here's how you can do this in Getright:

Go to Getright Configuration, under Advanced/Protocol check Send "Referer" in HTTP Request and then select Generated from the download URL.

The setup should be similar for other download managers.

3) Your browser did not send a referer. This normally happens if you right click on a link and select save-as, or if you copy and paste a link into a new browser window and press Enter. It may also be that your browser is set up to not send any referer, though I did not find any such option in the browser I'm using (IE6). Unfortunately we must test for empty referer or we still have the download manager problem mentioned in 2). But left clicking on a link works just fine and has been tested in IE6, Netscape 6, Opera6 and Mozilla 1.0.

Some software firewalls, for instance the Norton Personal Firewall (which is also part of Norton Internet Security) or ZoneAlarm remove the referer from HTTP requests which will block any downloads on any site that does a referer check. Hence such options should always be turned off. In Norton you have to go to the Privacy Settings and disable browser privacy (which doesn't really protect your privacy anyway as your IP address will always be logged regardless of that setting), in ZoneAlarm you have to go to Privacy -> Cookie Control -> Custom and uncheck "remove private header information".

Software like AdSubstract also blocks the referer and makes downloads impossible.

We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and hope you understand our reasons for doing so. Bandwith doesn't come cheap and we have to do all we can to keep the bandwith usage (roughly 600GB a month these days) down.

Remember to also visit www.cdcovers.cc

Awesome, thanks for posting this Jayden. I've been looking for a site that had a nice selection. Anyone know of any other sites that have scanned dvd covers?

Well...no matter what I do I cannot download it. Perhaps it's the firewall here at work messing me up.
