i love dvdshrink... i'm not sure if this is possible in dvdshrink for the future, but it'd be awesome if u could completely take out certain parts of a dvd, like extras or something, like if u can delete it instead of using "still pictures" that would be awesome, and also if it could be able to disable certain menus, say u took out a trailer in the extras, it'd make the trailer option disabled so you couldnt select it... i know u can do this w/ separate programs, but it'd be awesome if it was built into dvd srhink

Doesn't the "re-author" feature allow you to do this?

it'll never happen guys removing stills. Use Recode 2 for that..don't ask why it's just the way it is. If you want to do it the 100% free way you can try Title Settler or DVDStripper along with dvdshrink.

waylman (or anyone else).....wondering what you mean as far as deep analysis goes ("deep analysis gives higher quality.
i dont use it either ". We can get better quality by using deep analysi? If it does give better quality i might start using deep analysis. thanks, robert

reauthor only lets u keep the movie, u can't get the menu's or certain extras unless u just add it onto the end of the movie

Backed up two movies this weekend for the first time....DVD Shink is awesome! Got a lot more to backup before the kids destroy or lose my original disks! At least I'm safe on a couple DVD's now.

It's a great program, my first burn with it was easy and good.

I only have one problem here, I burned a movie on +RW. It can play on my Sony DVD player, but It can't read on both PC DVD drives (SamSung SM-308B, Toshiba SM-1212) even though both of them are listed as DVD+RW compatibale.
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hey guys, I just upgraded my Nero to version 6, and the "Copy protection" and "i/o device error are no longer there anymore. So I guess it helps. I successfully backup two DVD with no problem.

Just wondering, I use DVD shrink version 3.1.5 and the ripping time for a full movie is about 20 minutes using a 12X-READ dvd writer... Is this normal or is it too long???? let me know, thanks

It's about right. You don't get a constant 12X through the entire rip, avg out to about 8X so figure 9 min if you're maxing out that drive just to do rip.

If you're doing compression or stripping then 15-20 min to rip/compress/strip is about right. Depends on what kind of system you're running, that stage is very CPU/mem dependent.

My backup times run well under 1 hour (15-20 min deep analysis, 7-15 min rip/compress/strip, 15 min burn). And I say yes, definately do deep analysis if you have the time to spare and you're doing compression. I usually take out extra audio tracks so I don't have to do as much video compression, no point in keeping the 2.1 track if 5.1DD is on there. Likewise with French and Spanish, not like I'm gonna understand what they're saying anyways.

It does, but it's not all that easy. I agree, just being able to cut-out certain sections, keeping the chapter and subchapter menus in order would be very nice.

Thanks so much Virtuamike, I guess it's about right to rip a DVD in 20 minutes.

Also everybody, I have a question if you guys can provide so input would be great.......

Should I install the DVD burner as the master drive or the slave drive?? the second drive I have is a cd-rom. so not sure if there is any difference in performance to do master/slave??

thanks

The fix is in 3.1.6b7, which will probably soon be re-released as 3.1.7 with an installer.

3.1.6b7 without installer (handy for Linux users) can be found here:

You made a comment that caught my eye... "handy for Linux users". Can this program be run efficiently on Linux? Is it used under WINE or is there some other way that it's done in a native mode?

I don't have my burner yet but I downloaded DVDShrink 3.1.6 today. Just found out about it today in a thread at newsgroup alt.video.dvdr.

Here's a thread on how to get 3.1.4 to work with WINE (I expect 3.1.6b7 works too, as does 3.0b5).

The link to the download is dead now, you could try mrbass.org for older versions or directory listing

I believe you would want the DVD burner as the master on the secondary IDE since it will be getting the most use. Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but any data from the slave device has to pass through the master device on the way to the CPU/RAM slowing things down a little bit.

The HD should be the master on the primary IDE.

If your DVD burner can burn CD's then you might want to put the CD-ROM as the slave on the primary IDE so you can burn directly from CD-ROM to DVD.

If you are copying a lot of files from the CD-ROM to the HD then put the CD-ROM as the slave on the secondary IDE.

The idea is to not be using two devices on the same IDE at the same time. This will slow things down a lot.

This program with Nero rules!

I burned "The Missing" 137 min. last night. No problems, looks great. I wonder at what point the length of the movie will be too much for DVD Shrink. I mean, has anyone burned Lord of the Rings with this, and did the compression degrade the picture?

i love this program also.

one difference between this and instantcopy is that i can't seem to be able to remove extras. the best i can do is set it to still image which still can take up quite a bit of space. when i right click an extra, i see the delte option is grayed out. can anybody help?
