3.1 is nice. The integration with NERO is great. The reauthoring versus the 3.0beta is much easier. This is a great program.

My only issue is a large majority of my backups have some pixelation or pauses. I have the TDK 840 burner, have tried ricoh +r/ritek G04's -r's/ritek -rw and +rw and all have the issue on maybe 1/2 the disks. Sometimes the movie will play but pause once or twice. Sometimes it is unplayable -- it pauses and freezes. Very fristarting.

I had a GOVIDEO DVD/VCR combo and have now swithch to a Samsung 3500 since it appeared good on dvdrhelp.com.

I have also stopped using labels but that has not fixed the issue. My comp is fairly new (DEll 4600) and the TDK is using DMA.

I am about to give up on backups and just let my kids use the originals. I thought it was themedia (now use Ritek's mainly), burner (had a NEC-1300a with the latest hacks), then the DVD/VCR combo.

Any reco's? I may try another player -- any reco's on a DVD/VCR combo that plays -r or +r great?

I read on one of the guides somewhere that (paraphrasing now) once in a while you will run across discs with copy protection that isn't removed automatically with DVD Shrink. They recommended using DVD Decrypter first on these discs.

But of course that should happen very rarely. I haven't seen it yet myself, but I've only backed up about 8 discs.

Leave it to me to have it happen on my very first try! heh heh. Thanks for the info though; I'm glad it wasn't me doing something wrong...it was the DVD!

It's only happened to me twice thus far and I've done 60-75 movies. Didnt need to use DVD decrypter though. I just did the deep analysis before encoding and that seemed to work. BTW was using 3 beta 5 just downloaded 3.1 ! Thanks for the tip guys!

Yes and no. There have been guides/HOWTO/FAQ's posted in this thread already I believe. Check them out.

I used to use the same setup actually, up until about 6-8 weeks ago in fact! I did a few with DVD Shrink "only", but then I switched back to using DVD Decrypter to dump all of the movies I want to do for a day onto a drive. Then I'll go back and use the Open File option in DVD Shrink. I know it's an extra step, I just feel DVD Decrypter is such a stable and versatile app, I'd rather deal with the more advanced stuff like re-encoding/authoring with data that's already on a hard disk... I seriously am/was just like you until a few months ago. Now I've replaced DVD2One with DVD Shrink and I don't intend on going back. You should give it a try... [EDIT]Like you, quality was my biggest concern, and while using 3.0beta, they look just fine (depending on what I choose to keep of course). And you can't beat the price so you might as well try it out![/EDIT]
Thanks for the advice. I am going to give it a shot and see how it goes.

Tried the new 3.1 version of DVDShrink here, and from the quality of the first 2 movies, I'll be sticking with DVDDecrypter and DVD2One in the future. Not only does the 2 program combo give better final results, it's also considerably faster.

I used to think that. especially after paying for DVDX you have to say that. Cause you feel like an idiot after using dvdshrink for free.

DVD shrink is better and i have all of them

This might be out of topic, but does anyone know how too combine two 2 dvds into one dvd and still have the subtitles too?

UGH! I still can't get this thing to work on my system. The installer with 3.1.1 will install the program, but the program still won't run.

I can't find the specific requirements to run this app, but I know it uses DirectX. Does anybody know what version it requires? Maybe I need to get a newer DirectX version

I don't know since I'm rather stupid, but I would imagine? it only would need DirectX for the video preview/playback? Maybe I'm smoking something though. I disable the playback and previews anyway for the most part. Have you had a DVD in your drive when trying to launch the app? If so, try launching it without any disk in the drive. Who knows.

How is this program different than CloneDVD? I've been using that for a while now. Let's me choose what video chapters to copy, which audio pieces to copy, it puts it all on one DVD and shows how much quality you'll lose from compression.

Does Shrink offer some other feature that I'm not getting from Clone? Clone does the burning and everything so why use Shrink?

Another testamonial.

While I don't want to use absolute terms such as best or perfect, I have to admit for being freeware, DVDShrink is awesome. Hell even if it wasn't freeware it'd still be pretty great. I'm not raving or being some diehard fan about it-- honestly at first I didn't think freeware could be that great compared some of those programs that you've gotta pay for. I mean free? But that was a few months ago and now all I use to back up my movies is DVDShrink. Cheers for the author of DVDShrink who's done a great thing for owners of dvd burners. I've heard 3.1.1 is the last version he's putting out of DVDShrink barring any major hidden bugs.

Thanks op.
I use Xcopy platinum, but I find that message at the begginin of the back up pretty annoying.

I will give this software a try, alon with nero.

How do we motivate the author for his efforts.... no links on the dvdshrink.org site or PO Boxes to show our appreciation of his kick a** work.

Couple of questions. I have DVDXCopy Express. Will installing this program cause a conflict between the two programs? Second, can I use the trial ware version for Nero for this or do I need a full version? Thanks.
