The quality difference with deep analysis on a highly compressed movie is night/day. I've compressed down to 56% and still had a movie that you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference from the original. I thought it was just that my old TV was so crappy that I couldn't tell the difference, but I took one to my neighbor's house and played it on his 42" HDTV and it still looked GREAT. This is the best program out there....period.

Mr. Bass,I don't know if you've noticed this with the latest version (and not that it's your fault) but i've noticed a sort of rippling effect when I ran 'Out Of Time'
(Denzel Washington) thru that 3.1,leaving all menus and what have you intact. That is, when it 's being played back ,a rippling effect is seen on the picture at certain points,it doesn't take too much away, but I just thought I'd mention it to show what type of results were obtained in 'full disk' mode......

As far as dvdshrink software is concerned I think the poster said split to two dvd-r while retaining menus. It's easy to split to two DVD±Rs doing main movie only.

Thus why I STILL use DVD X Copy. Its really the only program that consistently does this well.

Is DVDShrink better???

I used to use the same setup actually, up until about 6-8 weeks ago in fact! I did a few with DVD Shrink "only", but then I switched back to using DVD Decrypter to dump all of the movies I want to do for a day onto a drive. Then I'll go back and use the Open File option in DVD Shrink. I know it's an extra step, I just feel DVD Decrypter is such a stable and versatile app, I'd rather deal with the more advanced stuff like re-encoding/authoring with data that's already on a hard disk...

I seriously am/was just like you until a few months ago. Now I've replaced DVD2One with DVD Shrink and I don't intend on going back. You should give it a try...

[EDIT]Like you, quality was my biggest concern, and while using 3.0beta, they look just fine (depending on what I choose to keep of course). And you can't beat the price so you might as well try it out![/EDIT]

Thanks for the advice. I am going to give it a shot and see how it goes.

Dvdshrink is a good quick program to use when you just need a quick backup, but anything more than 10% or so starts too look bad, if you have to use more than 10% compression you should consider using CCE and Reauthorist.

I readily advise people to download this sort of stuff quickly because we never know when the DMSA is going to rear it's UGLY head and make people remove software from the net.

I assume you are referring to the DMCA

DVDShrink has legitimate uses, too. I archive some of the TV shows I record and it's useful to fit 4 commercial-free hours onto 1 DVD.

Of course the guide to using CCE as well as the amount of other software you need to make it work look like something you would find in an instruction manual in the Space Shuttle.

anyone have any issues using this and the optorite dd0203? I notice when "backing up" dvd's that sometimes the voice won't match in the middle of the movie. The only way to fix the problem is to stop and restart the movie from that chapter. Anyone else have any problems like that?

I'd donate $50 paypal to DVD shrink now, I even looked for a link. the least i can do!!!

WTH are you doing making 100+ "backups" a week? A little income on the side?

That would be illegal!!!! I would never do anything like that !!!

But i have a "friend" that does do this. Nice covers everything. And makes an extra 5-$700 per week at least. And sometime i hear he gets the DVD screeners of movies that arent even out yet, and he makes a killing on those. I had to stop talking to him cause i;ll have nothing to do with that!!!

Im glad i erased my 25gigs of M3's and filled out the amnesty thing also. I would hate to break any rules.

But whoever makes DVD shrink does deserve some cash from all of us. Still cant figure why there is no donate link or anything. But thanks to whoever!!!

I have tried alot of programs for DVD backup, I have to say dvdshrink is the best I never use compression, I just want the movie no menus or extras but I hate having to use 2 disks on alot of the movies I want to backup.

So I tried compression for the first time I used "american history x" as a test I started with 10% compression and I did not see any artifacts it was beautiful I could not see any difference from the original, I was very impressed. Then I decided to get brave and try 30% I thought ok maybe I'm pushing it but WOW I was shocked I even blind tested some friends to see if they could see the difference, NOPE.

I love this thing. No more 2 dvd's for 1 movie for me.

Nope, I meant DMSA.... I just happened to have not known what I was talking about!

For some reason, I was thinking Digital Media SECURITY Act. I don't know why.

Thanks for the catch.

I use DVD2one because I just can't get DVDShrink to run on my machine. I had downloaded DVDShrink v2.3 and v3.0 beta5 but neither one will start up at all. I double click on them, my cursor/pointer/arrow briefly changes to an hourglass and then.... nothing.

Anybody else have this problem? Admittedly I'm using win98SE, but they're supposed to work on Win98

I've compressed to 50% before, and couldn't see a difference on a 27" TV

Just tried it and within 10 seconds of copying a disc to the hard drive I got a "Copy Protection Error" Device I/O input error or something.

I ended up using DVDDecrypter to extract it and then DVDShrink to shrink it and burn it. I like the feature that it will automatically start burning once it's done re-encoding. That alone will make me keep using it. I guess I'll just have to keep using DVDDecrypter though to extract. Not sure why I got that error?
