Any ideas/work arounds?

Did not have any issues backing up Lion King 1 1/2. I used DVDShrink3.1.5. I just made sure no compression on the main movie, then let it back up. I would llike to help you more, but nothing much else to say.

I had no problems at all either. I used DVDShrink & Copy2DVD. Flawless. It was also my very first back-up.

i was looking for this thread to answer some questions i had about the dvd-rom and 30mm compatibility checkboxes, but i think i'll just read the guide instead.
mentioning that i saw that od has 15pk of maxell dvd+r/-r for b1g1f = $26.97 this morning (in the store - don't know/don't care about online)
the dvd-r are labeled "made in japan"... and were price tagged as $66.60...
somebody else can go create the thread and take the credit
just in case heads wanted to know
but i saw it first

Thanks OP for alerting me to such a great program. I upgraded to Nero 6 (I bought the OEM version from Compuworks for $6 shipped - it worked great for DVD burning etc.) and it linked fine to DVDShrink3.14. I first decrypted using DVDDecrypter to my HD, then took that image and ran DVDShrink on it, deep analysis, deleted the other language titles that I never used anyway, compression was about 56%, then DVDShrink burned it using Nero and everything came out great. The quality even at 56% looks great to me. I'm using the Koss 305A (from Sears for $32) and it even reads the Princo burns.

I will have to try upgrading to DVDShrink 3.15 and see if there are any performance improvements.

Again, Thx MrBass!

Thanks, for dvdShrink. I use it along with dvdDecrypter. I have a question. Why do we need to do deep analysis? I've not been using it.....just backing up with dvdShrink. thanks, robert

An explanation of deep analysis from earlier in the thread.

Someone asked -
Is the prime function of 'Deep Analysis' to enable the program to arrive at the target size without doing some last minute, panic-stricken squeezing, or does it improve video quality?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both! It is dual-purpose. I'll try to explain in english, not math:

Suppose I want to achieve 50% video compression. The easiest way to do this, is take each picture, and squeeze it to half of it's original size.

The problem is, that not every data in a picture can be compressed. An encoded picture consists of both motion vector data and DCT coefficient data. It doesn't really matter what they are. The important thing is, DVD Shrink can only compress the DCT data.

It so happens that the amount of space devoted to motion vectors and the amount devoted to DCT data is different in each picture.

Suppose one picture consists of a 50-50 proportion of motion vectors to DCT data. To compress this picture to 50% of it's original size, you'd have to remove all the DCT data! Needless to say, the result would look awful.

Suppose another picture consists of 25-75 proportion of motion vectors to DCT data. To get 50% compression, you'd only have to remove 2/3 of the DCT data (still rather a lot, but hell, DVD Shrink sucks at 50% compression).

It would have been better to know in advance, that the first picture could not be compressed much, and the second picture could be compressed more. This way you could spread the compression evenly between the two pictures.

This is exactly the function of deep analysis, except on a bigger scale: it calculates the best distribution of compression over the entire 200,000 pictures of a movie. --dvdshrink

Why does it take me like 1 1/2 hours to rip and another 45 minutes to burn a regular DVD on 2.4x media? If someone could tell me how to cut down the time on the rip I'd be a happier camper I am using a p4 2.0 machine 512mb 120 gig 64mb video. I dont think its a hardware issue rather a software issue. I am using Nero 6.0 with DVD shrink 3.1.5

BTW whats the average time this should take? I am new to buring DVD's I am using a 8x dvd burner.

Shock,

That actually sounds consistent with the burning times I've been getting. I used the Starlogic Princo discs that only allow 1X burning and they take over an hour to burn, whereas the Imation DVD-R's that I bought later can be burned at 4X and take from as little as 20 mins to a bit over a 1/2 hour to burn.

The ripping process is what takes a while and I'm not sure what can be done to speed that up. I have found that DVDDecrypt takes about 25-30 mins to rip the DVD to my HD, then I mount the HD file to a virtual DVD drive and then let DVDShrink go at it for Deep Analysis which takes about 30 mins and then there's the time for the actual burning. I have found that DVDShrink is slower with the initial rip than DVDDecrypt, but I may try DVDShrink again to see if I can get faster results just using it as an all-in-one Rip/Decrypt/Burn tool.

Also, I have had some problems with DVDShrink ripping the original DVD (the CRC error problems) but I am still using version 3.1.4.

Borg - Thanks for the tip. I will have to DL that DVDDecrypt and see if that helps speed up the process. I do not do a deep analysis for that it would take even longer. I should just splurge and buy faster media, been looking for some hopefully I'll find some soon.

Hey everybody,

Please help me!!!! I am using DVD Shrink 3.1.5 and I kept run into error when I do a full disc copy.

It always give me errors like "Copyright protected" and "error with I/O device", but i can backup dvd using DVDX copy though, so any input will be great since i heard this DVD shrink should work great.

thanks

Shock, you need to investigate your DVD drive (the one you're ripping with) and see how fast it rips. I bought a Pioneer A05 and its firmware locks it at 2x. So I got a separate reader to do the ripping.

If your DVD ripper is not fast enough, there are sometimes firmware fixes out there.

I get that error when I try to rip from my BTC DVD+/-RW drive. If I rip from my LG DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, all is well. I don't have any idea why this is so, but it is. Do you have another drive you can rip from?

Is it just me or this is a classic sign of your DVD drive having DMA disabled? If using winxp, go to your ctl-panel-> system -> hardware -> device-manger and uninstall both of your IDE controller. Let XP reboot and it will detect all IDE channels back. 1 1/2 hours is less than 1x, all drive have to be able to rip faster than that.

ok I'm working on a newbie guide. Not quite finished..hopefully tomorrow sometime it will or the next day. Anyway I believe you may not have the region set on your drive yet. Here's the guide. which will show you how to manually set your region.

believe that is part of the problem as well as DVDShrink..I almost always use Decrypter(all files) then do either DVD2One or DVDShrink..am about to uninstall 5.5.10.54 or just upgrade to 6..will report back in a few.
<edit> did the uninstall/reinstall on 5.5 ..no workee on clearing the error(did not have with Sony dru510a..must be this newer 8x drive and 5.5 isn't fully supported in all ways..) so moved up to latest 6 ..no more I/O error ..
encoding with latest Shrink is @ 6k+/KB/s and climbing.. final top speed @ 7.5k KB/sec ..8 minutes or so on the encoding..rip from my LG DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive(4480B) ..DVD burnt w/ Acer/BenQ 800 @8x..plays nicely.

I think you might be on to something. I just checked both of my drives with NERO Info Tool and it reports that I have no region code for the drive that gives me errors when attempting to rip with it. For the other drive (the one that rips fine) it shows a region code of 1.

Thanks for your great site, btw!!!

UPDATE:

Hey guys, I just upgraded my Nero to version 6, and the "Copy protection" and "i/o device error are no longer there anymore. So I guess it helps. I successfully backup two DVD with no problem.

Just wondering, I use DVD shrink version 3.1.5 and the ripping time for a full movie is about 20 minutes using a 12X-READ dvd writer... Is this normal or is it too long???? let me know, thanks
