DVDShrink 3.2 released July 25th new AEC algorithms

I noticed last week that 3.1.7.6, the current version, is the LAST VERSION of DVD Shrink and no more will be forthcoming. Bugs will be fixed in the current version but no new features.

Truly a great program.

I have found a few DVDs that failed the be decrypted using DVD Shrink and Decrypter has worked on them when Shrink has bombed.

yes DVDshrink is indeed a great program.. the interface is very easy to use and very functional.. it is ashamed that no one is going to be updating the program..

it owuld be nice to incorporate cce for the ultimate quality for movies that are long and need a lot of compression..

i only use dvdshrink for movies that only show 80%+.. if it dips lower i re-encode with dvd2dvd/cce.. which is currently the best quality producer in terms of reencoding a dvd

I know its probably all been said before, but here it is again :
The following is the way to backup DVDs to 4.7 DVD discs:


1) Rip the DVD using DVDDecryptor, you can also rip using DVDShrink, but I had trouble with it for a couple of DVDs so I just use DVDDecryptor.

2) I then use TitleSetBlanker to blank out the Extras, FBI warnings, Trailers, etc, this will then enable you shrink the dvd with an improved video quality for the movie while maintaining the DVD Menus. There are other tools to do this but I found TitleSetBlanker to be the most easiest to use. You will also need DVDShrink 2.3 which allows you to see the RAW files so that you can determine which title files to blank out.

3) Use DVDShrink 3.1.7 to shrink the DVD that you ripped

4) Burn the shrunk DVD to Disc. You can output the shrunk files in DVDShrink to an ISO and then use DVDDecryptor to burn the ISO

With DVD media at these low prices (comparatively, anyway), I never shrink anymore. I just use DVD Decryptor to rip all the files to my hard drive, and DVD Shrink to span two disks (using the start/end track in the re-authoring mode as mentioned earlier).

I wasn't pleased with the quality of some of my shrunk disks on my new 42" plasma, so it's worth it to me to spend two disks and ensure top quality reproduction.

Try dvdshrink 3.2 with it's new AEC algorithms.....retains the sharpness and doesn't smooth it out nearly as much. In my testing on a P4 2.53GHz takes an additional 17 minutes but it's worth the extra time.

There is no comparison. Let me count the ways -
1) I was one of the first users of XCopy and was disappointed to discover that each DVD burned by XCopy has an identifier that identifies you - the user.
2) No initial black nag screen from Shrink.
3) Much better picture quality with Shrink.

I still kept XCopy on my computer thinking that I'd once in a while use the flexibility offered by XCopy of choosing which extras to keep while retaining the menu (Shrink did not allow this as of 3.1.7 - you either did the whole DVD or re-authored without menus). But I do not use XCopy at all. If I want to split a DVD across two, I use DVDFab.

when dvdshrink saves a copy of the dvd on your H how do you burn another copy of those files by using nero?
the fles that are backed up have IFO, BUP, VBO extensions
my nero burner seems to be looking for ISO extensions

Dc5505: Choose that you want to create a DVD Video Disc, and then put *ALL* of those files in the TS_Video folder & burn.

Hey thanks, Popper! I have been looking for some sort of guideline for what is and is not an acceptable compression ratio. I was going by an 80-85% ratio. Nice to know I can go aw low as 70%.

Newer versions of Nero should have no probs burning the Video_TS files directly.

But you can always use ImgTool classic to create an .iso file from your VBO's that dvdshrink made. See DOOM.org (under GUIDES) for detailed instructions

.iso's are nice if you make occasional multiple copies days weeks or months later.

My advice is with dvdshrink 3.2 there is no reason to not burn with dvddecrypter. With the prior version you needed an NTFS partition so it could save an .iso file over 4GB. Now with 3.2 even if you have a FAT32 partition (win98 FAT32only...or even win2000 or XP..that has a FAT32 partition) it'll work.

Bottomline: dvdshrink 3.2 + dvddecrypter = 100% freeware solution.
