I'm just wondering if DVI in on a LCD is worth an extra 20% ($90) in the price.

I'm lokking at the Samsung 710N and 710T.

Thanks.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say that these guys are blowing this way out of proportion. From what I've read DVI is NOT a big deal, provided you have good 2D output on your videocard. If I owned anything nVidia I would want DVI, but analog is perfectly fine running on my 9700PRO. I'm sure DVI would look better even on a good 2D card, but from what I've read the difference is negligible.

I've tried both VGA and DVI... It's just not worth $100, you'll never see the difference unless you put them side by side.

Hmm..the way I see it, if you are already spending 400 on a monitor, why not spend the extra 90 to get DVI, since it is an investment anyway.

The video quality is much better on dvi with an lcd. Just ask anandtech:LINK I woudl suggest you read that whole articel but that is just the page on DVi vs Analog. Also look at the subjectie ananlysis on the lcd's DVI always scores better. it may only be by.5 on the score range but .5 out of 5 is 10%.

If you don't got calibration software DVI. Sometimes auto adjust when on analog doesn't work as well as manually adjusting. With DVI it's usually right on.

Difference between DVI and analogue on my 191T is noticeable to my eyes, it`s crisper/sharper & also another advantage is most DVI LCD monitors also have an analogue connection as well so you can hook up a 2nd PC to the monitor and switch between DVI and analogue with a touch of a button(like on my Samsung 191T).

For gaming going DVI is also better.

Bottom line, if I was buying a LCD monitor again I would make sure it has DVI connection even for $90 more.

Exactly, how often do you buy monitors. So if you're spending a lot of money already, why not get the extra functionality now instead of desiring it later. The LCD's should last you years and having DVI now before it eventually becomes standard would be a good move.

While in 2d, the difference isn't that noticeable (it is still pretty obvious if you run dual LCD's, one analog and one DVI), it makes a *huge* difference in anything with motion. DVI streaks and ghosts way less, and often has much less blurryness as well.

DVI on a good LCD is inarguably sharper than any CRT, IMO; analog is sharp but you could make a very convincing case that professional CRT's are sharper.

Also, cleartype/text look discernably clearer on DVI.

Two of my bosses run dual Dell 1703FP's, one on digital and one on analog; it takes seconds to notice which is which, and the clarity difference is surprising! Until you've actually worked with it, you don't realize how much of a difference DVI makes!

Does your 191T ghost as much as mine in fast games like UT 2k4, Mem? I run a CRT/LCD setup, and do 90% of my work on the LCD, but UT 2k4 and Far Cry are a bit too ghosty for me on my 191T; I have to switch to the CRT's for FPSes, personally.

I'd say spend the extra money and go with DVI. When you're using a DVI connection there is no analog conversion of any sort in the chain and that leaves much less room for error on a fixed pixel display like an LCD. When you're connected via DVI and running at the native resolution it's a pixel for pixel mapping which means when your graphics card manipulates a pixel that translates to an actual pixel on your display. When you're running at that same resolution connected via VGA the digital->analog conversion on your video card and the resultant analog->digital conversion on your display can change that and result in a less clear image. Even if you're not going to use it now it's worth it for the future.

If asked the same question about a CRT which is inherantly an analog device my answer would be different. Then you're talking about which DAC is better, the one on your video card or inside the monitor.
