I don't know how to measure signal degridation, but I can say this. I have a 25' DVI-D cable hooked up between my HTPC and my Sharp MX-20 projector, and the picture quality is awesome. Lord of the Rings Extended Edition looks darn near HD quality. I think I paid about $30 for it about a year and a half ago. At the time, it was near impossible to find a DVI cable that long, let alone for a reasonable price.

Easy question here(not trying to hijack post):

So I have a ATI X700 I am thinking about buying a Samnsung 56" DLP rear projection T.V which has DVI ( -I or -D I don't know) and it also has VGA.

people have told me that I can't run a DVI cable from my video card to the DVI in the T.V. because they are different, the DVI-D and DVI-I

but from what I am reading in this post I can... what do I need? and would the DVI cable look better than the VGA cable @ 1024x768?

Also, it has HDMI, can I run DVI to HDMI from the computer?

And which is the best way to do it for gaming and dvd watching ? VGA, DVI or DVI to HDMI ??????

thanks for answers and Thanks OP!
sorry for off topic question.

Here's another vote for monoprice.com. Their 6ft hdmi cable was only ~8 bucks and it works great. Also got some optical cables from them for really cheap.

nguyendot1 - if you live near LA, you can go to one of the LAcomputerfair shows and pick them up for like $1/piece (if you are looking for BNC>RCA adaptor). I used them for my SuperGen SX on my amiga in the 90's... although i got rid of that already - i stopped using Substation Alpha and Jacosub for a while.

Kremerica - for that type of question, i'd post on avsforum. they have many debates on quality issues, but this type of question sounds like it would be easy enough for them to answer without making a 100 page debate.

As for cables, I did a lot of testing with cables and connectors when i had access to expensive equipment at a university (nice ocilloscopes)...

In the end, I found a few results: cables have varying degrees of quality. there are some really crappy cables out there. you don't have to spend a lot of money for decent cables, you have to spend more money for better cables (out of spec use). the logic of "digital is there or not there" may sound correct, but that is not the whole truth.

You can use a DVI-D cable. I'd suggest a single link cable (dual link will give you no benefit).

You can run DVI to HDMI if you want, but there's really no reason to. Save your HDMI input for future use.

DVI and HDMI should give you the same visual quality for gaming, DVD, and everything else. VGA will be inferior.

I am surprised to see Apex on here, hehe. I check fatwallet, gotapex, and these forums often.

I'd agree with Apex with the VGA - I have problems with centering on all my LCDs and I suspect it might be the same with a DLP (not talking about overscanning either).

He Emtropy, do you use your cable between your TV and your PC?
What I am asking is "is it possible to use a DVI cable, for DVI to HDMI conversion between a PC (DVI) and a HDTV (HDMI)?

3 Should be fine. You'll hook the Y Pb Pr to the R G B and ignore the H V. Just look to see which one goes to which. It should be printed right on the display, though it might be in the manual. You may then have to set the TV to YPbPr mode from RGB.

It keeps corrosion down. However, most plugs on your electronics and video cards are not gold, so it wouldn't really help too much there.
