Hey all, got an issue.
I'm having problems with my computer screen going black and not responding. Here's the situation:
First the setup:
Asus k8v Deluxe w/ a clawhammer 3200+
Onboard audio and lan
XP pro SP2
Abit Siluro Geforce 5600 256meg (latest nvidia drivers)
Dell 1905fp over DVI @ 1280x1024
DirectX 9c
I installed a game demo (Restricted Area) and when i double clicked the desktop icon, the screen went black and i couldnt CTRL ALT DEL out or anything - i had to hit the restart button.
Two days ago, i installed GTA San Andreas and the same thing happened, i started the game via the desktop icon and the screen went black. Again, i couldnt Alt Tab or C.A.D. out. Rebooting was the only option.
Going to DXDIAG's Display tab, i ran the Test DirectDraw test and on the third test (Fullscreen) the screen goes black and.. you know the drill.
Back after a reboot, i try DXDIAG's Test Direct3D and the screen immediately went black.
The OS had been installed for a while and i was figuring perhaps a reformat was a good idea - clearing out the cobwebs and starting over might help. So i reformatted.
Back in, all updated, new drivers all installed. i'm in 800x600 and when i go to a higher resolution, like 1024x768 and 1280x1024, the screen goes black. i was AT 12x10 resolution BEFORE THE FORMAT!
Reinstalled GTA San Andreas and it worked! Unfortunately at 800x600. When i up the resolution, the screen goes black.
DXDIAG tests that i did above have the same results.
I unplugged the DVI cable and went over the analog cable and guess what? I can run the dxdiag test with no problem, and i can resize the desktop to 1280x1024
So it would seem that theres an issue with the DVI portion of my setup. Either the card, the cable or the lcd.
Should i mention that ALL were working fine up to a few days ago. I played Neverwinter Nights on it the night before i found this problem. It slipped my mind to try NWN again after the format - i'll try that tonight.
So the question is, does anyone know of any utilities that i can use to test the system out? I'd rather not go to best buy and drop $400 on a new card, but it seems like the best option. The OTHER idea was that it had something to do with DIRECTX. I was thinking that maybe Neverwinter Nights used OpenGL or something and GTA and the Resticted Area Demo AND windows Desktop relied on D3d.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
