DVI Cable

So I just got a Samsung 19" LCD and thought I would try out the DVI. For some reason this particular monitor doesn't come with a DVI cable (my only complaint about this model). So I went to Circuit City to get one. The guy I talked to said all they had were the ones for home theatres, but that should work.

Now I have this $50 cable and it doesn't seem to work. Do I need to somehow enable DVI on my graphics card (9800 Pro) or did the circuit city guy screw me?

BTW it is a Belkin Digital Video Dual-Link Cable.

TIA for the help!

your monitor probably is DVI-D. Make sure you bought a DVI-D cable, otherwise, it should work as your gfx card is probably DVI-I but DVI-D works with DVI-I but not the other way around. Sorry if thats confusing.

You probably just need to press a button on the monitor to select dvi. Also, $50 is way too much considering a dvi cable cost all of $1 to make. At my workplace, we throw out extra dvi and vga cables.

dvi cables are not like vga cables...the difference from a high quality (brand name) dvi cable between a generic dvi cable is so small you won't even notice the difference. Just get a generic dvi cable for around 15bucks MAX.

50$ is way too much as others have said. BYW, nobody at any of those b&m stores knows what they are talking about.

If they knew what they were talking about, they would be intelligent enough to work at a real job.

agreed - make your own out of the appropriate number of rusty coathangers, with electrical tape for insulation, and you still won't notice any difference in quality

Well hey, I worked at Walmart for awhile. Was the only Walmart where you could get excellent computer advice on 3rd shift.

Nah. They probably just buy a crapload of Dell Ultrasharp flat panels, which always come with both DVI and VGA cables in the box. If you are a major Dell monitor customer, you'll have those cables breeding like rabbits in your drawers if you aren't careful.
