DVI connection does not work

Hi,

I have a Leadtek 6600gt TDH graphics card (AGP) from 2 years ago with a DVI and VGA output. I have tried to repeatedly get a Dell 2005 FPW to work but it always ends up in power save mode. I have tried the DVI recover utility from Dell but that does not help either. Now I have a Dell 2007 FPW and I still have the same problem.

I can get the monitors to work if I use the included DVI to VGA connector but the DVI cable just does not work. A couple of minutes into XP and then back to the power save mode.

I read online that there is some EDID error with Nvidia cards in general. Does anybody have the same problem with other Nvidia cards?

Two dell 2005's have already been replaced and this is a brand new 2007FPW.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

CD.

By power save mode what do you mean? Which resolution are you trying to run? Am I way off?

I had an FX5700 card until like 3 months ago and it wouldn't go beyond 1280x1024 using DVI output and my Viewsonic has a native resolution of 1600x1200. So I was using the VGA output until I got 7600GT a few months back and with this card, the 1600x1200 resolution worked right off the bat. I'm not quite sure if the old GPU was broken or if it just didn't support 1600x1200 on DVI since it was 3 years old.

But if you can try another GPU that's what I'd suggest, unless I'm way off.

On a recent build using the 690G chipset, my LG2000C refused to work over DVI (onboard) with XP Pro, although VGA (onboard) was fine. Over DVI, the monitor would work until the OS loaded, and then it would power off. If I hooked it up over VGA, and then switched the source to DVI, I would get garbage and and flickering. I knew the DVI-out was not to blame, as my 2007WFP worked just fine.

The solution was to load XP using VGA, and then update the driver for the monitor under Device Manager-->Display-->Driver-->Update Driver. I let Windows handle the update, rebooted, and the LG2000C suddenly was OK over DVI, and has been ever since.

This is clearly somewhat different from your situation, and I still do not know why there was a problem or why the updating the driver worked, but it may be worth a shot. I had never encountered this problem before with onboard or add-in video cards.

Scoop,

The monitor would work fine from a cold boot, work fine for a couple of minutes and then turn off. And I would get the message that I should move the mouse or hit any key to bring the monitor out of power save mode (same as standby). I am going to try another GPU (ATI this time around).

Dawza,
I will try that and let you know if it works.

I was wondering if loading some Linux distro (knoppix) off the CD would help to see if the problem is with the XP. But I am not sure if DVI would be available in Linux during setup.

Thanks for the replies,

CD.

Update,

I replaced the 6600 gt with a Diamond Ati 1050 and DVI worked fine, no issues. Uninstalled the drivers, used driver cleaner and re-installed the Nvidia card and DVI does not work again. I don't know if the problem is with XP but going to load Ubuntu over the weekend and if that works, the problem may be with the XP.

Apparently many people have had issues with DVI, some on Viewsonic monitors and some Dell's but mostly with Nvidia cards and XP. If anybody has any knowledge of DVI under Ubuntu, please let me know if this will work.

Thank you,

CD.
