I am in the process of switching from Xfinity/Comcast to Uverse. I have a show on my Comcast DVR that I would like to preserve before I return the DVR to them. What software/hardware do I need to do this?
A capture card for your PC. One with either an HDMI, component, S-Video or composite input depending on what outputs your Comcast DVR has. I don't think you'll run in to copy protection issues (HDCP or Macrovision), but if so component should be free of them. The card should come with software to capture the show with.
It might be easier to see if the episode you want is available for download on the Internet someplace.
I've tried to do this before. The software for Windows is pretty terrible. I was using the firewire port, and ended up using Linux to do this. It wasn't pretty, but it worked on non-copy protected content.
Ask yourself if this is really worth it. If you are talking about copying really really obscure shows from your DVR to your computer, then I can understand. But if it's anything even remotely interesting, the chances are, you can find it available for legal download from iTunes or find it in newsgroups, in every resolution you can imagine.
