DX10 Card - when to buy?

Hi everybody,

I'm building a new main/gaming system some time over the next few weeks. I have a perfectly good evga 7900 GT for now.

I can afford to drop $450 for an 8800 GTS, but my question is, does anyone know what the DX10 roadmap looks like? I don't like buying 1st-gen products as a rule and don't need the best/fastest, but I would like a DX10 card. Better to plunk down for the 8800 now, or wait for round 2? Anyone know when that might be?

Personally, I'm waiting for more than just these two to be out. I also want to see a couple of DX10 games out there and see how they handle DX10, not 9. I would hate to spend a lot of money on them now to find out the 2nd generation are the ones that handle DX10 well.

How well do these DX10 cards (with their numerous driver issues) handle current DX9 games? What about going backwards; DX8, DX7, et cetera games?

Personally since I just picked up a 1900XTX I will be waiting at least two years to upgrade my video card. Besides DX10 will most likely take another year or so to get all the kinks worked out.

Well the 8800 absolutely crushes in current DX9 games so it's not a mistake to get one. I don't imagine there will be very much DX10 content this year and even next year DX9 games will far outnumber DX10 games.

get one whenever you like ... but don't get it solely to play DX10 games

expect "full Dx10" games to be about 2 years away.

I got an 8800GTX today went up from the X1900XT and wasnt cause of DX10 did it based on pure card pwnage.

8800GTS is the sweet spot now I think.
It's actually half-way affordable and performs close to the 8800GTX and comes within a few FPS when you overclock it (I got 650mhz on the core and 1025mhz on the memory (2050 ddr)).

It's all about whether you want to go for it and if you have the $$$.
By all means, get a 8800 card. They both perform good, hell they perform really good. (they're teh pwnage)

And BTW, you can get the 8800GTS for cheaper then $450.
AFAIK, a few of them are $419 and below at newegg. Not sure if thats with/without the rebate though.

Actually I doubt we will see any DX10 exclusive games this year or even the next, all games released this year will fall back to a DX9 mode if needed, if they were DX10 only, they wouldn't sell much.
