holy crap some of those game look freaking amazing!!!

I am so glad games are starting to use high res textures, i hate when textures look blurry. Anyone know what the Supreme Commander and CoH DX10 patch will add? they look out of place graphics wise from most of those titles.

my guess is those new patches just enable new shadow renderring and whatnot. They obviously cannot make them 10 times better.

These are pretty old. I remember seeing them posted here several months ago.

For Eve Online thats not true. They are making a completely seperate client and rewriting it for DX10, they are also as re-texturing everything hi-res. So yes, with a patch, they can actually make it 10x better.

As far as the other games, no clue.

EDIT: Atticus - because it's Vista only. And when people hear that, they assume Halo 2 will have DX10 (like I did once). It's MS, what do you expect?

Why do they mention Halo 2 in the comments? It's been confirmed by Bungie and Hired Gun it's not DX10, unless they've planned to do some patch (which, tmk, is impossible because it's engine was built 3 years ago and only enhanced for PC play.)

Yeah, Halo 2 PC is DX9. There is quite a good number of new graphical tweaks, with new visuals added, but it's all coming from the DX9 capabilities, there is no way you can just patch a 4 years-old engine to make it sustain DX10 effects, they would have to re-write the whole engine entirely. And it has been confirmed by Microsoft anyway, so why even speculate. Halo 2 for PC is DX9, end of story. Halo 3 might be DX10, but Halo 2 isn't.

seeing SS is one side of the story...seeing/playing those games LIVE on some big screen with all the physics and lighting in action....blows you away.

I remember seeing some crysis videos with the lighting/shadows etc...

Just whow....

Ill try FlightsimX and see if it looks that good. That one pic with the mountian looks photo shopped. That water looks like a picture from a beach put into that lake.

/shrug

Heh yeah, I just ran around in sky harbor and the water doesnt look like that. however the performance from running it in Vista is unbelievable. I can turn up the water to max, terrain much higher than in XP and everything runs smooth.

Well there's some hope for Vista as a gaming platform after all, then

<--- Running on x64 Ultimate.

Sweet. It just occured to me that by the time these games will come out we will need a new generation of video cards for them. Unless DX10 titles are coded differently, 8800GTX will not be able to play those games. Not even SLI.
Just look at the details; it's out of this world. Current gen cards are not meant for that.

Most of the advantage of Dx10 is that it eliminates a lot of the overhead that is limiting performance scaling on DirectX 9 titles. The DirectX team was claiming a 6x speedup in ideal conditions. That's probably very optimistic regarding real games, but there should be a pretty substantial speedup still.

You mean that in ideal conditions, a DX9 to DX10 game conversion would actually work up to 6 times faster?

Supposedly, if you re-implemented a Dx9 game with the same graphical features using Dx10 with SM 4.0 shaders you could achieve such a speedup, though it's not likely to be anywhere near a 6x speedup. That's not completely unheard of, using SM 3.0 shaders was often a bit faster than doing the same thing in SM 2.0. Graphics processing is pretty parallel, so if there is a lot of overhead and waste in performing a specific operation, it can probably add up quite a bit.

A lot of what the Dx10 team was trying to do is eliminate situations where the graphics card does it's allotted work, then has to wait a relatively large amount of time for the CPU to send it more things to process over the slow (in computer terms) PCI-E bus. Evidently modern GPUs aren't used very efficiently due to such overhead imposed by the Dx9 API.
