I've been playing BC2 for over a month now and my son continues to tell me how both of my rig graphics look identical.

I tried to explain the differences between 2 cards and DX9 and DX11 but it is SO little it's HARDLY noticeable.

We have to rigs below side by side so it's easy to compare......and it seems like he is right.

It's almost impossible to tell the difference between DX11 and DX9. We went to # of different maps on empty servers (to same spot) and MINIMAL is the only word I can use.

You really have to look for it. For example some of the details might look better on DX11 (character seems to be most noticeable) but in general I think the upgrade to DX11 cannot be justified for BC2.

Have you guys made any side by side comparisons?

I'm a bit surprised, cause DX11 was one of the main reasons for getting 460 (besides the fact that I needed 4870 in 2nd rig......7900 wasn't cutting it anymore)

Again, I think the difference is VERY minimal AT BEST. Very hard to spot unless you really look hard.

Can it be just BC2? I do remember that it's one of the first implementation of DX11.

Its true, I compared it myself using BC2 with 6850 vs 9800GT,and i couldn't find a tiny difference. I mean i'm sure it's there but you REALLY got to look for it.

I think "BC2" would be a better thread title.

As far as I'm aware, most DX11 effects are possible with DX10, DX11 just does them faster. Between 9 and 10 there can be visible differences, if developers bother. It stands to reason BC2 would look like a DX9 game, since it's a port from consoles that are basically DX9.

I've read dx11 WoW ,improvements is noticeable and nice.
Dirt 2 is very minimal.
Unigene Heaven is very noticeable. Unfortunately its not in a game engine yet.
As a gamer, if you need extra gpu power for say more AA, then it might be worth it for you to play the dx9 or 10 exe in BC2.
If it looks nice that way, then you have 'won'.

Well, for whatever it's worth, I tried it on Dirt 2 as well.

Same results, MINIMAL difference AT BEST

yes most games look no different yet lose performance. basically I would need a faster card just to get about the same performance I can get in DX9 or DX10. it seems silly and thats why upgrading for the sole reason of being able to play a new DX version is silly.

The fact the game supports DirectX 11 doesn't necessarily mean much. It's not like DirectX 10, where a game supporting DirectX 10 requires a card with DirectX 10 level features to work, eg. Shader Model 4, and so presumably any game using it is going to use those features. DirectX 11 on the other hand supports various profiles, including one for cards that only support Shader Model 2. A game might use DirectX 11, not for any of the new rendering features offered by DirectX 11 (or 10), but just for some of potential performance benefits, especially when multi-threading.

Even if a game use using Shader Model 5 or other new features of DirectX 11, these are often just going to be icing on the cake. A of bit detail or accuracy that's too hard or too expensive to implement in the base-line Direct3D 9 engine. Direct3D 9 and Shader Model 3 can do almost all of the rendering tasks a game would want to do.

From the games I've played, DX10 and 11 just add small fancy effects that you probably won't notice unless you look for them (e.g. sun rays).

WoW DX11 is hardly any different than DX9. The game has outdated graphics... fortunately Blizzard was smart in making it look cartoony so it ages better over the years.

In BC2, AA can only be enabled with DX10 or DX11 as well.

Honestly, DX10 & 11 in current games just seem like gimmicks. I recall when Crysis "DX10 graphics" were "unlocked" and could be used in Windows XP DX9. Seems like artificial restriction more than anything else.

I would prefer to enable some better form of AA or increase resolution then use DX11 because the only thing I notice is the FPS dropping like a stone for a minimal visual effects

heres a road in DX9:

and a road in DX11:

I actually think the OP has a totally valid and accurate point. I came to the same conclusion recently and picked up two more 480s for cheap added a third to one system and put another in a second system. I'm done buying video cards, as there is just nothing out there that needs more power anymore. Thanks to consoles video card hardware has leaped far beyond anything any game developer is putting out.

There are no games out there or on the horizon that require upgrading anymore. Unless you're a benchmarker there is no reason to upgrade if you have a Radeon 6950 or GTX 570 and game at 1920x1200 and down.

Have any examples of an actual game rather than screenshots from a benchmark ?

their still isnt a single gpu card that can run crysis on enthusiast settings 60+ FPS, same thing with Metro 2033...

so video cards quite obviously have a way to go..

I thought in BC2, you can't run AA in DX9 so DX11 makes it worthwhile since you can use AA.

Tessellation is not possible on DX9, so it is a difference between dx9 and dx11.
you can run DX11 without tessellation and it will look the same as the DX9 pic so what I said is correct.

But you cant run DX9 with tessellation.
no shit. he said the visual difference in the pic was "between DX9 and DX11". its from DX11 running tessellation. again IF you dont have tessellation on then it will look like DX9.
