I can't find the other links i know of for upscaling stuff, but that should get you steered in the right direction.
FFDShow + whichever player you want to use will help things out a bit.
Dunno for sure about the Xbox upcoverting, but i don't think it does.

FFDShow is not going to make a crappy picture look good. Your dvd should look good out of the box with FFDShow making improvements. Work on your DVD playback first, then look at FFDShow.Originally posted by: QueBert

good link, I think I might just end up buying a standalone DVD player and hooking it to the LCD's input. I will fiddle around with FFDShow and see what I can accomplish.

I believe most DVDs are interlaced, so compared to an interlaced CRT they won't look good. Also LCDs reveal more flaws, especially high contrast ones. Give HD-DVD and Blu-Ray a shot for a real test or upscale DVD with ffdshow to get more satisfactory standard definition results.
