DYNAMIC DNS UPDATER WITH ROUTER?

Does anyone know how to set up a dynamic dns updater for linux and configure it to use the router's ip and not your computer's. I have a home network my computer is connected to a router that is connected to a cable modem. I'm trying to set up a home website, but it will only update my local ip and not the ip for the router. Anyone know anything that can help me out with this problem?

Depending on your router, the router itself may have the capability to do this. Most new Linksys and Netgear devices do. If that's not an option, hit up www.dyndns.org and go to their downloads section. There is a huge list of apps for virtually any OS you could want that should be able to suit your needs. Not all of them will pull the external IP, but some work based on input from a third-party, such as a website, that feeds the IP back to the client, and then back to the DynDns service.

no-ip.com has a linux updater. just use that on the linux box write a small script to keep it running its very easy to set up and use.

i asumme your linux box is the gateway and has 2 nics 1 external and 1 internal.

if this is the case youll get it done no probs.

Hey Thoreau,
Do you happen to know which one from dyndns.org has the option to get your ip from a website? They don't go into to much detail explaining them. I have a generic router that I can't remember the name of off of the top of my head. I'm pretty sure it doesn't do anything at all automatically for me.

FYI, I don't know that I'd screw around with the SOHO router's ability to use DynDNS updater. I've had an SMC and a D-Link that wouldn't reliably keep the IP address updated. I finally just installed the updater on one of the network computers, problem solved.
