Bristles?

Yes, I knew my spelling didn't look quite right, I didn't even know if it was really a word.

Kirby vacuums are good and are very customizable to do a lot of different tasks. My parents used to have one that could do carpet shampooing, hardwood, carpet, etc. via different attachments. They're expensive though.

Right now my parents have an Oreck vacuum which they like. Haven't used it though so I don't know.

I like the "whatever I can buy for $5 at a garage sale" idea. Garage sale season peaked around here at the end of May, but there's still a few every weekend and it'll probably peak again at the end of summer.

that seems good for hardwood but not so good for carpet..

hmmm i have both in my house. thoughts?

well for hardwoods, you'd turn the beater bar off and just use suction.

As for the bag vs bagless claim, I don't know if that true. With bags you are going to lose some suction, as you do with most bagless vacuums. The dyson however isn't supposed to lose any suction no matter if it is full or not.

My two hairy dogs and my own lazyness about cleaning the vacuum out kills vacuums fairly often hence the cheap yardsale vacuums. The Dirt Devil I am using now has held up great for two years and was $2 because it had a broken belt and the lady didn't want to change it. Went through one hoover and one eureka that both lasted around a year but the eureka did have something wrong with the motor when I bought it. They all sucked pretty much the same .

i got the new hoover EMpower...it rocks, it's new and 150 bucks...it has a 'turbo boost' button for uber suction, and it has a hush mode as well

i spoke with two sales people at best buy about vacuums on two separate occasions...both said that the hooer windtunnels are the best of what they sell (and that includes dyson)

Just picked upour new Dyson DC70 tonite, I vacuumed the house yesterday with our old Dirt Devil and a new bag.
Used the Dyson tonite.....Holy Cow!!!!!!! I was amazed what was still in the carpet.
I like the fact you can leave it at the bottom of the stairs and vacuum all the steps without moving the machine. Really easy to move around too.

Used to have a high end Hoover Windtunnel. Replaced it with a Dyson. Huge difference, the Dyson rocks. Practically everyone who's tried my Dyson ended up buying one too.

There are generally 2 basic things to look for for cleaning. Agitation and suction. The Dyson's agitation (the spinning brush at the bottom) is strong, but the bristles are a little softer than some other vacuums. It's kinder on carpet, but not quite as strong. The other thing is suction. Nothing I've used or heard of can match the Dyson's suction.

I have the Dyson animal as well. As for the beater bar not working on carpets, I vacuum my bedroom weekly and still fill the canister every time (2 cats, and the litter boxes are in the bedroom, so lots of cat traffic). The carpets definitely look clean after I vacuum them. I have a combo of hardwood and carpet, and the Dyson transitions easily. Going from using the base to using the wand is a little bit of a pain, but not really all that bad (my previous Panasonic was easier since you just pulled the hose out of the base and went to town - the Dyson is a little counter-intuitive but you get the hang of it pretty quick).

It's just a matter of attachments and stuff. Take a look at it to see if you would make good use out of them.

I had the Animal version, but didn't find much use for the attachments, so I went with the basic (yellow). Your home situation may be different.

One other thing to consider is attachments are often cheaper when purchased separately. You may want to start with the yellow one and buy the attachments later.

500 bucks is on the cheap side of vacuum cleaners, no?

I consider it a bargain.

there are like 20 models at target less then $250, the dyson was almost double the 2nd most expensive one.

i'm sure one could find a dishwasher for 250 bucks as well, doesn't mean it washes dishes very well.

Most "good" vacuum cleaners start at 1000 bucks.

My fiance' and I got a Dyson Animal about 4 months ago and we're just amazed at how awesome it is. My folks like Kirby, but I'd say save your ducats and get a Dyson. Worth every penny! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Eureka whirlwind lightspeed. Around $90, HEPA filter, bagless and excellent pickup and quality. Have had mine for over a year and use it 2-3 times a week. The pickup is excellent, have two cats. Have to empty out the canister after every use because of the amound of cat hair it picks up. Also has a internal washable filter. HEPA filter is still good after a year of use.

Price 4/4
Quality 4/4
Performance 4/4

Overall 4/4

W bought a Kirby and it was a good value. It lasted many years. I don't want to spend the money they want for one now. We went to Wally World and bought one for around $100.

LnT carries them and they have like 20% coupons almost all the time. Also you can do those gift card deals where you get the cards for 20% off at stores like target. I believe the yellow base model is 400, so you could pick it up for 320+tax.
