I have an eBay second-hand one, and it's in fantastic condition; the only bits missing are the hose attachments, but our old Hoover ones work fine. I can't vouch for Amazon, but I would imagine that they'd be pretty good.

Ross,
I bought mine on ebay as well, I just watched for one in my area and picked it up. If you want one, that is the way to go.

Best thing to do is go buy one of those DYson things from somewhere with a wide open 30 day return policy. Use your regular vacuum in one section and the Dyson in another (or whatever other vacuum you get). Then see what the difference is. Or bett eryet, vacuum one area and then go over it again with the new vacuum and see if it really gets more stuff out or not.

If you aren't satisfied, then just take it back.

That's actually a good idea. No shipping expense or risk of it being damaged.

Which model and what price did you pay?

How do you like it so far? Pros & Cons?

I just had a quick look at the Dyson website - in December 1998, their turnover was £320 million. I'm :Q to think what it is now that they've expanded in the USA.

Ours is the DC-04, I think it was about £60 on Ebay (present from my folks).

Pros

Awesome cleaning power. Try cleaning your car with it- the amount of crud it gets out is astonishing.
No bag - doesn't lose suction.
Very simple to take apart if it gets clogged.
Seems to be made of very tough plastic - highly durable. Ours is a year or two old and there's not even a scuff on it.

Cons

A bit heavy, especially for cleaning stairs.
Expensive compared to regular cleaners.

How is it performing as a house vacum? I was interested in Dyson, and the small one would be nice for the house(3 levels)

Pretty damned good, the amount of crud it's sucking out of the carpets each week is astonishing. However, I'm fairly sure that the previous tenant didn't actually hoover, ever...

It's a bit unwieldy when cleaning the stairs, but apart from that,

Good thread, was wondering about a $500 vaccuum and looks like the yellow Dyson for $400 will fit the bill perfectly

consumer reports says its not worth the money. last month or two they did a line up of all the vacumns, this month they just had a bit on the newest dyson. it works, but only as well as cheaper ones in both those issues

people just like paying premium for the pretty design.

Anyone know how the Electrolux Lux rates against a Dyson?? Im not talking about the cheaper Lowes version of the Electrolux, but the one that you can only get in the specialty stores. My mom had an old Lux and it has lasted 15 years. The ones they make now look the same. Supposedly has 370air watts (more than the Dyson)

I'd rather listen to actual users who used it for more than 1 hour BTW, I'm getting it from Amazon.com refurbished for under $200 after 25% off coupon which is DEFINITELY a great deal.

I bought a Dyson about a month ago. Believe the hype, because it really does kick ass. One of the best purchases I've ever made. I vacuumed the house after I got it and had 2 FULL canisters of dirt. It was unbelievable. I could have potted a plant in all the garbage the Dyson picked up. Needless to say, my old Eureka went straight to the curb.

BTW - If you don't want to shell out $400 for one, buy a factory refurbished model. I got one for $269 shipped on ebay. It's the same as a regular model except it comes w/ 6 mo. warranty instead of 2 year.

You can't vacuum your own floor?
Twice a month is disgusting.

Consumer Reports is so overrated it's almost crazy. Their reviews are no more valuable than other people's reviews. In fact, I'd take a review of an average home user of that magazine/site any day. Made up conditioned tests are never as reliable as actual usage.
