Dyson vacuums worth the money?

so how many of you that said a dyson is not worth it actually purchased and used one in order to come to the conclusion?

$10 says that if I ran my Dyson over the path you vacuumed with your Kenmore, there would be a lot of dust and dirt it would pick up that your Kenmore couldn't.

It's not just what you see on top of the carpet, but what's in and below the carpet. A Dyson will get all of that crap. And no filters and easy to dispose of the dust and dirt.

My thoughts exactly! I own a Dyson. I have owned the same Dyson for now 5 years. It has always worked and worked well. Yes, it is bagless so you need to be carefull emptying the chute. It has cleaned the best out of any of the vacuums I have owned. I have never had to have it repaired, ever. The HEPA filter washes clean so that never has to be replaced and there is no impeller in line of the dirt so they wont ever break.

Find some deals, get a Dyson but don't spend retail price for it.

I used to be a member of the "$100 vacuum is the way too go" crowd. However, we have three Australian shepherds who seem to shed on different cycles. We burned through 4 cheap vacuums in about a year before I finally took a friend's advice and bought a Dyson Animal.

The Dyson is well worth the $$$ in my book, I just wish I hadn't bought those three additional cheap $100 vacuums a couple of years ago

We went for the Animal too. We have two cats. The thing picks up an unbelievable amount of pet hair and it doesn't lose power as it fills up like other vacums do. Rooms smell noticeably cleaner when you're done. It's also designed so you can empty it without getting a face full of the stuff you're trying to get rid of - very important for athsma sufferers.

I use a roomba for daily cleaning, and a $3 stick vac I got a goodwill to use every other week to get to places the roomba can't

I've been considering getting a dyson. My sources can get them to me for $200 (legally), so it's not the price that's keeping me away, I just like being lazy. but if being lazy means extra gunk in the carpet, I may need to make a decision sooner than later

a question for all of you dyson owners. i have two dogs and unfortunately, just like kids, they puke on the floor. to get up the mess i use resolve carpet cleaner to get out the stain and then vacuum up the paper towel bits.

on my current vacuum the hose and vacuum inlet get a little greasy from this which require me to take it apart every once in a while. do you have similar issue with your dyson?

No and we have 4 dogs and 10 cats. We generally use simple solution to clean up accidents and wait until it dries completely before vacuuming. We have had our Dyson 2 years now and still love it.

A guy who lives across my street runs a carpet cleaning business. Has a van and a truck and some very expensive machinery that does an awesome job.

He uses a commercial vacuum that has hepa filters, etc, the whole shebang.



He cleaned my basement carpet the other day. My dogs stay in the basement at night.

I had not vacuumed in about 2 weeks down there. He vacuumed for about 10 mins and then started to get the stuff out of his van. I showed him my dyson and said I wanted to vacuum. He had heard of them, sure, but thought they looked ridiculous and were all gimmicky.

I vacuumed the carpet and pulled out a TON of pet hair and other junk his didnt touch. Probably 1/4 of the receptacle full of hair and junk his highly rated vacuum didnt touch.

He emptied his bag (its a microfiber bag in his vacuum) and went over the floor again. He probably pulled out a tablespoon of hair and dirt.

Made a believer out of him that day with the dyson.

The dyson animal vacuum I have has about the same suction as my shopvac.

A lot of people I know love the dyson after buying it... its out of my range right now but unless you got one and try it, you won't know for sure..

Walmart sells a hoover fusion, just as good as a dyson (i've had both), and retails for around $130

i've got hardwood floors and my dyson is great.
they're not that expensive, i got a refurb at amazon for ~260 and it's been great for 2 years now.

couple of things:

I know from experience that dyson's ARE unreliable. It's not just what I "think". They break easier and more often than other vacuums that are >$100.

Also look inside the canister of your dyson.. no... REALLY look... about 50-75% of that "dirt/dust" is actually CARPET FIBERS.


If you have builder's grade or medium grade carpet, DO NOT get a dyson unless you want premature wear.



The problem is that the bristles on the roller are WAY too stiff. It tears up the carpet. Also, they do not filter dust as well... A lot of it gets thrown right back into your room, then settles onto the floor/furniture after 10-15 minutes.

Like a lot of people, I thought the Dyson's were just pretty-colored plastic junk, till my daughter brought hers over one day...I laughed at her when she bought it...We have a fairly pricey Electrolux canister, which isn't the BEST made, but is above average, running about $450. new. Wow...I vacuumed the house with ours, she followed with her Dyson Animal...EVERY ROOM she filled the canister with pet hair...We have 2 cats that shed pretty badly, and a long-haired Chihuahua that sheds some...WOW! NO, they are perhaps not the best quality of construction, being "Made in China" our of plastic, but they work...better than any vacuum I've ever seen. You might be able to get a better one, but not anywhere near the price. Most of the better commercial vacs will run you double what the Dyson costs, and may not work as well...
BTW, watch the sale adds. We bought ours at Linens-n-Things with their 20% coupon...saved $110. that's a coupon worth hassling with...

We have a Dyson, and we like it alot. What kinda swayed us away from some of the models without the bags was the fact you had to replace these filters in them like every three months. With the Dyson the filter just needs to be rinsed cleaned and dried, not replaced. Besides that it really does a nice job. Before we bought the Dyson we swept our floor with our old vacuum, just wanting to see how much more dirt the Dyson would pickup verses our old unit. When we got it home we vacuumed and was amazed at how much more dirt and dust it picked up. We purchased our Dyson as a refurb from totalvac.com and have had it for 2 years with no problems whatsoever.

$10 that if that same Kenmore ran over the path that the Kenmore AND Dyson did that the Kenmore would pick up a bunch more dust/dirt that the Dyson couldn't.

What you (and others in this thread) describe is the most common vacuum salesperson gimmick. Use vacuum A then repeat with vacuum B. Guess what? Regardless of what A and B are, vacuum B will pick up stuff that A missed. The fact is, they don't pick up much with each vacuuming - lots is left behind. Thus B is not necessarilly better than A. Otherwise the reverse test would show that A is better than B.

The fact is that no vacuum gets everything even in a dozen passes or more. The Dyson, of course, requires more passes since it isn't as good as the Kenmore, but eventually they'd both get everything up.

when i had a carpet, I just bought a $40 walmart vaccuum. It worked fine.
