One of our friend's moms gave us a Dyson when we moved in. We did not ask questions. The carpet is as clean as when we moved in, and the thing hasn't broken yet. That's all I can say about it, really, other than "free" is definitely an appropriate price for it.

Our Dyson Animal handles all the hair that my dog can produce. Was it expensive? Yes. Does my dog hate it? Yes. Does it work? Most definitely. It's been a year, and we've not had any problems with it whatsoever. My wife uses it a couple times per week.

As for Consumer Reports, I remember reading something awhile back that questioned their methodology in testing (too artificial, from what I recall). Their methods and standards are not always sensible. If you look at their electronics reviews, they will knock down something's rating for ease of setup, when you only do that once. Anyone that uses their opinion as the sole basis for a purchase needs to have his or her head examined.

I own a discovery and agree, we use it just for cat hair upstairs on the carpet nothing serious and the suction is ok but not great, but the thing is amazing, simply amazing on our hardwood floor downstairs and tiled kitchen...I cannot use a standard Vac on that as everything just blows everywhere, and with sweeping it never comes out that clean...the roomba gets everything off the floor and it looks amazing...the only downside is that you have to dismantle and clean it which is a PITA.

With Dyson I had always thought they were delicate looking in their construction....we opted for a Hoover that cost $270 or so...my mother had an Electrolux and that thing was silly...1K for a vacuum that didn't even work that well and was heavy. I have heard/read the Miele makes some really nice vacuums.

We've had ours 2.5 years and the only problem we have had in all that time was a defective hose about 2 months after we got. I was so impressed by the customer service I received from them when that happened I actually posted a thread about it. I basically called them on the phone, they took my name and address, and I had a replacement hose about 3 days later.

The Animal is the one we have as well and it is perfect for our multicat and dog household.

companies have taken consumer reports to court and have always lost.

their methods for mechanical things like vacumns are pretty decent.
